Someone once told me that it was a mistake to assume that someone who seems to be in a deep coma isn't capable of hearing what's going on. When Newton's second wife Olive was dying at home of advanced cancer I used to sick visit and the last time I saw her, just before she died, newton and I were pulling her leg even though there was no sign of any life. Eventually I said goodbye to her and we both left the room. As we got on the landing we heard a whispered 'Tata'. We went back n but still no sign of life. She could hear what we were saying and was still there. It was the first sound she'd uttered that week and was the last, she slipped away the next day.
You mentioned hugs Maz. Anyone who knew Newton Pickles would be quite certain he was the last bloke on earth to give another bloke a hug. I called in one day to wish him and Beryl (his third wife) a Happy New year and as I was leaving he gave me a big hug. I was gob-smacked and so was Beryl. She rang me next morning first thing to comment on it and tell me he had died in his sleep that night. Work that one out!

It was drummed in to student nurses that hearing is the last sense to fade...

And I can tell you from experience that foster kids develop incredibly acute hearing...because nothing in life goes as grown ups say it will and life can change in an instant! I am surprised I don't have ears like an elephant....

Someone once told me that it was a mistake to assume that someone who seems to be in a deep coma isn't capable of hearing what's going on.

There was an article in the papers last week about a young man who as a child had been paralysed in a car accident, and apparently couldn't speak, hear or see and showed no signs of active life. But over years he gradually began to hear and see although he had no way of communicating that he was `awake'. Eventually a nurse saw some eye movement and they began work to help him communicate and move about, and I think he's now back to normal life. He said one of the worst things was that they put a TV in front of him and let it run old programmes over and over again!

I seem to remember another case where a person had been 'comatose' for years but when they recovered said that they had been aware all the time. Best to assume that they can hear and proceed accordingly. Just imagine the flood of relief you would have if you were in that position and someone took your hand and told you they were convinced that you were aware and locked in. A friend for life!
I think Liz is too busy fire-fighting to respond to us. I wish her all the best.....

Worse than ever if that is possible. We have a doctors meeting about Dad in an hour. Sounds a bit bleak.

We managed to get a place in an aged care facility for Mum so I am working on the paperwork.

I will post more info later in the day if I get a chance.

We turned off Dad's life support today. We managed to get Mum in to see him one last time. Extremely long day.

Thank you all. Dad passed away at 3.20am this morning. I told Mum but I'm not sure she understood. She is adamant that she will not go to an aged care home. Just another hurdle.

Thanks for popping in Liz at such a difficult time. Keep stuck in, you'll get there in the end. Look after yourself, you are under too much stress. Every now and again stop thinking about others and have a bit of 'me time'. Big hug for you.....

Some of the kids had a set off to Bolton Abbey yesterday and called in to see the old fart....



Joanne, Muthomi's cousin, Muthomi and grand daughter Jess. He's a big lad.....



You've got to admit two things, I am very lucky and I fit better between them that Mo! Jack evidently thought he was surplus to requirements....
