I moved a battery operated clock from the lounge to the conservatory yesterday so I could keep an eye on the time and not miss the 6.00pm news. I almost did miss it because the clock stopped at about 5.50 even though it had been going when I moved it. I corrected the time setting and put it back in the lounge - and it's been going accurately ever since! The conservatory was a few degrees warmer than the lounge but I would have expected that to favour battery life rather than stop the clock.

I have the same problems with my kitchen clock. Maybe it's something to do with the annual meteorite shower yesterday and today?

thermal expansion in the brass of either the 'motor' or the hand turning bit . the quarzt mechanism probably ok but in verticals the hands can bind. I have one mechanism in bits - need to think about how to re assemble the jigsaw with no picture as it all fell out when I took the back off , probably will get it done in about 10 years time

My clock ran on its back but not when upright. Ditched it. I might try making a clock movement for my next shed project. I fancy a very early bracket clock with one hand, very simple movement!
No response to my letter of 4th of August to the CEO of the Co-op Food Division so this morning the following goes into the post:
Peter Vincent Marks
CEO. Cooperative Group
New Century House
Manchester
M60 4ES
Dear Mr Marks,
I apologise for troubling you with what should be a simple matter but enclosed is a letter I sent to the head of your food division on 4th August. I have received no reply and there is still no Condor Green pipe tobacco in the Barnoldswick store.
I'm sure you will agree that whilst trivial this flags up a core issue in your business, the way a customer's needs are treated. I have one pack of tobacco left. What conclusion am I to draw from this experience? Do I go online and abandon my local store as a supplier? Does the Cooperative Group really care about its customers.
I am not happy. Can I expect a resolution, or even the courtesy of a reply?

The Olympics:
A lot of people shouting about a certain bunch of people that were specially selected, intensively trained separately to everyone else, paid from special funds to achieve the highest honours and the knowledge of winning
Socialist?
I think not!
Well done to John Major for setting up a scheme that took the politics out of sport, and proved that selection and investment produced results that were capable of out competing the world. A true meritocracy.
Now please roll it out to the rest of the country, and allow everyone the opportunity to 'go for gold'

I 'won' a twitter competition for a copy of metamorphasis inspired poetry from the National Gallery
http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/metamorphosis
I have donated it to the library for the 'writing group' as the library apparently is currently unable to accept donations (bizarre)
If they don't want it, it may go to the Hospice shop

The Hospice Shop on Church Street (Or their landlord) have solved the problem of illegal donations left in shop doorway, a fire hazard, by installing a full metal roller shutter. Tidy, smart and does the job!

one person: these Lib Dems do a lot for the town
other person: have you ever tried to do anything in the town which doesn't include the Lib Dems?

Thinking of a career in leaflet distribution
2 weeks ago I promoted the Town Centre Pendle Scrutiny
Last week I deleivered a legal letter from the West Craven Disability Forum to all the retail businesses in Barnoldswick
Today, I am delivering a note to advertise the West Craven Disability Forum's campaign to recognise those retail businesses who are truely accessible for the disabled on a five part plan.

I asked last night whether the town council had a step by step guide that they might loan to other bodies wishing to put on events in the town square
Cllr Whipp said no

Also at last night's Town Council meeting
A cllr, who doesn't go to the General Purposes committee meetings, asked whether it wasn't dishonest to keep an over payment from DECC with regards to the money the Town Council got for the LEAF study
'Silence'

One could keep overpayments , but not spend them. The accounts should show as a creditor - money due payable on demand.
Is the Town Square owned by Town Council , Pendle Council or LCC ?

The poor people made redundant as the first Remploy factories closed yesterday, more to follow. (
LINK for Welsh closures). Remploy was more than just a group of factories, it was a humane and useful part of the support system for the disabled. There seems to have been no cost benefit analysis of the closures beyond the crude saving, I have seen no mention of the consequences in benefit payments or the social worth of the enterprise.
I got a letter yesterday.....
Do you think someone had a quiet word after the letter to the Group CEO on Monday? Now we will wait and see whether it works.

They have spent it
Whyperion wrote:Is the Town Square owned by Town Council , Pendle Council or LCC ?
The Town Square is 'owned' by Pendle, but everything around it (road and pavements) 'belong' to LCC
The only thing 'owned' by the Town Council is the old Mortuary on The Butts
The Town Council through Richard Nelson, the Town Clerk, did obtain the licence for the Town Square which nominally everyone within the town can use for events (you'd still need Public Liability Insurance)

Apparently, Barlick is a 'small Lancashire village'. I expect better of the Manchester Guardian.......
Though I think an editorial decision was taken yesterday not to accompany the A Level results with the usual pictures of pretty blond girls. To I have to admit, the chagrin of the BTL commentators....
