Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
I have browsed through the wikipedia entries for the Crimean war and the Battle of Balaclavain 1854 this afternoon.
Then I looked at the history of Ukraine All quite straightforward - if a touch unstable.
When this affair all started it was said that Transnistria would be next on the agenda. Never heard of it so I looked it up. Transnistria - Now that will be a little more tricky, but they will have to wait their turn to be centre stage.
I think I'll restrict my interest in politics to closer to home. Pendle and Oldham is enough for me.

I had rough ideas. I had forgotten Transnistria and possible impact on Romania. Assuming the US Does want to be leader of the free world someone had better have a word with them - Kellogg seems to be saying sane things. I know the feeling David.... The history of that region is so convoluted and intertwined. That's the reason why so few historians have tried to understand it.... Norman Davies is an honourable exception. His two volume history of Poland (published in 1979) was recognised by the Poles as being a master work so as part of my investigations into Europe I read it but found it too complicated for my tiny little brain! (I see there is a new edition with two chapters added to bring the story up to date..... ) For £12 you can find out for yourself! (LINK)

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
I usually buy the books you recommend - but that one seems too much of a challenge.
Update on the Oldham Council situation - for anyone interested. Very odd. Raja Miah seems to have given up -after 6 years of campaigning, and I suspect will join "Reform" with the aim of becoming an MP. "Dream on " says I.
The killer letter from the editor of the Oldham Chronicle seems to have vanished without trace. I might ring the news desk when I need a bit of fun.
Now the treal reason for this post -
I haven't had my Council Tax demand and it's 31 March tomorrow. I think that may be due to the Council defying the previous Government, and moving to a four day week. Same money for only 80% of the work. Apparently the measure is very popular with the staff.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Norman's book..... I don't blame you David, I found God's Playground a challenge even in the days when I was in my prime. It's so complicated but on the whole well worth the effort.
I've seen reports of councils adopting a four day week. It seems like a hostage to fortune to me. Sooner or later there is going to have to be a move to rescind the order and that won't be popular!
Perhaps Raja Miah has decided it isn't worth the effort. I fear Reform may come to the same conclusion eventually. I wonder how the May elections are going to go.....

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Just had an email to renew my TV licence. They said it ran out on April 9th at 10.58 am. Not much notice, and suspiciously precise !
Get it over with I thought, and clicked on the link. It led to an application form to set up a Direct Debit. I thought that was odd as I don't pay that way. Went away and came back later. This time the link did not work.
Time to look closer - the email was from this address - "© TV Licensing" <Tv_licence_no_reply@vms.co.tz>
Really - .co.tz leads to Tanzania. Forget it.
You never know these days though do you? The headlines today concern a pair of ladies - said to be Labour MP's - trying to do doing a bit of overtime in Israel - who it is said were born in China, and Yemen. Compared to that - having your TV licence administered from Tanzania is a trivial matter. Do we any longer have a nation worthy of the title?
All concerned in both matters, have quite correctly been given "the bum's rush"

I'm glad you realised in time David. These phishing expeditions are flooding in these days. I have had scores connected to my TalkTalk account and the other day had one on my phone purporting to be from the DWP.
I suspect a frightening number of people fall for them.....

Midnight 15.
Rory McIlroy has won the US masters after a one hole play off against Justin Rose.
Best bit of radio commentary of a sporting event (from BBC Radio 5 live) I've ever heard. To and fro - surely the last chance for either man. What drama - even for an old cynic like me. A world class sporting history moment. Surely will get an Award.

I would have liked Justin Rose to win. If I'd known it was going to get so close I would have stayed awake!
Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
As you get older you spend more time thinking about the past than the future.
Easter, and Good Friday in particular, was the fair at Daisy Nook. Bus to Woodhouses, then quite a long walk. I find that Lowry's painting was done in 1953 - that means I am more than likely to be in the picture. I wonder if that's the year that Uncle Sid was taken in by the 'find the lady' con men who relieved him of a lot of money, and caused Aunty Josie to cancel the rest of the day.

Worth a look though - Just in case you thought these cooking videos were 'a piece of cake'.
Checkout her Fish Finger Pie - with a topping of a tin of beans and sausage, and mashed potato. Memorable.

I see that Trump is once again criticising the chairman of the Fed saying he is a 'major loser' because he hasn't cut interest rates. Once more the markets have punished Trump by falling.....

Trump will want to have the head of the IMF kicked out because it's now saying America will be the country hit hardest by his tariffs. I wonder if we'll reach a tipping point when things start going really bad in America, especially for his supporters in the rust belt. They might just turn on him then!

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
I think I'm right in saying that the IMF and the World Bank are attending a meeting in New York this week. Trump wants to abolish both of them......

Heard on the news this morning that Musk is stepping back on his allocatd job for the Orange Knob. Apparently to try to breath life back into Tesla which has taken a direct hit from Trumps brilliant plans. Evil comes to him who evil does and thinks for that matter. "Events dear boy"

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Good afternoon group. To imitate AA,
"My name is Tripps and I am a Youtube addict".
As the lady in Richmond, (I do hope she was called Brenda) memorably said, when enquiring what we were doing in the white van "I'm troubled wi' me nose".
I've been curious for a while now about how much Youtubers make from their channels. It's not easy to find out, and there are plenty of posts which say they will tell you - but then don't. Here's a bit of evidence which perhaps confirms what I had guessed. Just circumstantial though.
A poster who follows fly tippers found one red handed and filmed him. I saw the clip about two days after posting and the author was bragging that he had earned £ 740'ish just from the one post, in just a couple of days. He showed the payment on his phone .
Then yesterday I saw "Rate my Takeaway" get into a bit of a dispute with a rival, and he gave away more detail of his operation than before. It seems he is one of a three man team consisting of presenter, cameraman, and editor. He said they split the take three ways equally. That is after deduction of expenses such as the van, travel, cost of the food etc.
He has had a new van since I've been following him, and funded trips abroad to USA, Turkey, and Spain, from memory. He has recently remarried, and bought a house. He has also launched a 'food court' business in Huddersfield. If he funds all that from a third of the income stream - he must be paid a great deal.
I conclude that they are possibly earning something in the region of several thousand pounds per week? If so - how much must the really successful sites such as Dr Nurse John Campbell, with his over three million subscribers, and enormous viewing numbers, be earning.
Not jealous - just interested. I don't have to watch them and it costs me nothing.
