Pasta is the word I wanted you to get. There's more to it than that, because it's a representation of something else but is being described as `pasta' from its appearance. I'll tell you what it is because you wouldn't get the extra bit unless you were a follower of obscure astronomy news and I only found it by chance. It's a graphic representation of `nuclear pasta' which is what the astrophysicists are calling the stuff deep inside neutron stars and which is the hardest known material in the universe. They say a teaspoonful of it would weigh around 90 million tons! The scientists have used simulations to stretch and deform the nuclear pasta to test its strength, and this required about 2 million hours of computer processor time. You can read more about it here (and there's even anti-spaghetti!)....

Ha Gloria, I knew you would get it straight away! I dug it up in the muck heap this morning. Sparky lost it last winter. It's hard, smooth and shiny...

Looks like a toe nail from a huge bird so I'll guess Ostrich claw.

No, sorry. Not the end of something larger. If you look it has a recess in the end where it was in the gum, it's a complete tooth. I'll give it one more day.

Sorry Gloria no. I think I have put you all through enough misery! I got this tooth in a box of ivory fragments that came out of an old workshop and before anyone asks I am perfectly satisfied that it's at least 100 years old. I sent a pic of it to the Natural History Museum in London and they replied that it was either a lion's or a tiger's canine tooth, they would have to have it in their hands to do tests to decide which. So that's the answer to the best of my knowledge.

I think I know Gloria and it's such a good one that I'll hang back and let someone else crack it. Very unusual and a goodie.
