Is it anything to do with checking the accuracy of key slots - are they called keyways?

Sorry. Nobody has got it yet. I can't put another pic up for a clue as I haven't been able to manipulate any images as yet, can't get Gimp to accept pics so I'll just have to tell you. If you look at the left hand end of the bar you'll see a split collet. This accepts 1/4" square cutting tools and the nut on the right hand end pulls on the back of the collet tightening it and the tool up. It's very old, made by Barmor. So it's a lathe cutting tool holder.
Someone else will have to put a new one up, I can't do it at the moment......

I'm not an expert on these things but that was my opinion as well. I was hoping that some of the living fossils may pin point it more exactly. Picked up on the beach at Bridlington

I lived at Victoria on the A 616 about 8 miles from Huddersfield & 12 miles from Sheffield, at nearby Gatehead there was a disused colliery and on the tip were many Ammonite fossils, as a young school boy it fascinated me that at sometime in the past that part of England must have been under water !

Yes, an ammonite but probably too worn to identify a species. You could try asking here and they would know what species are found at Bridlington:

Road workers lamp?
Or is it the lamp that you rub and Theresa May pops out of the spout and tells you that all's going to be well for the 29th March?

Vintage oil lamp whose main purpose is to be left inside steam engine pistons and steam chests. The common name given to this design of lamp is ... (sorry my mother forbids me to use the word), but an explanation can be found here.
Lamp.

Plaquey, your mother wouldn't let you use the word "stink"?
What made it a bad word?

P has it right of course. I can post pics now from the camera so I'll scratch my head and try to think of another, that is of course unless someone else posts one?

The last bastion of moral rectitude. No smoking, no drinking, no swearing, Always stand up for your elders on buses. Hold doors open for the next person. Funny there was no compulsory Sunday school. Dad thought they were a bunch of hypocrites. Luke 23:34 .

They drummed a fair amount of Bible knowledge into me P which has been very useful for taking the wind out of sails..... Didn't turn me into what my dad called a 'God Botherer'!

Is that a de Havilland Comet in the pic? If so, my guess would be the first flight to Johannesburg?

That's a good start, Kev, but it's not a Comet and nothing to do with Jo'burg. You're right that the aeroplane is significant and so is the location.
