It's not sealed it's just a U shaped piece of plastic which is convenient as a display piece. It has a decal on the front which says what it is hence the angle of the shot. I have another photo which shows this when you have got it.

Is something encased in lava?

Whatever it is, it looks odd in the photo. It looks like something orange-red on, or encased in, something else which is white with black speckles. The white stuff could be granite.

A bit of meltdown material from the Chernobyl reactor giving a nice pleasant glow in the dark. But more likely to be a bit of volcanic rock landing in some sand. Which all goes to show I don't know what it is.

Well done Tiz, yes, here it is with it's decal. It comes with a certificate of authenticity as well which I haven't photographed.

So concrete and mortar but it represents a lot more than just that.

That was 99% luck! I was thinking it's mineral, a part of social and political history, and collected on a holiday somewhere. There must be lots of other possibilities to match that but Berlin wall came into my mind for some reason. A good Mystery Object, Ian! Now, tell me,why is it red in the middle? Is it red brick coated in render?

No I don't think so the bulk of the chip is concrete, it looks like the red could be paint. There was a lot of graffiti on the wall and it could be a bit of that on the sample.

I think they are obsolete now but were always a cut above the ubiquitous grease nipple. I don't think I ever came across one that didn't work.
I've always been amused by the American coyness about grease nipples, they call them 'zerks'. They don't talk about chicken breast either, it's 'White meat'.
