Right folks, I am back on my Barrowford ancestry and am looking for the following: "Ing Ridge" and "Hag". I have Bolton ancestry born in these places and assume that they are Barrowford / Colne area as they were baptized in St Barts, Colne. Any ideas please. I have found reference to Long Ing, is this it? And what about Hag? I know I am in just the right place for some suggestions.

Julie we have Long Ing in Barlick but for Barrowford I think you may need a bit of input from Nolic or Barrowford John

Jules, the only Hag I'm aware of is Haggate which is part of Briercliffe near Burnley. Nolic

Why go to Colne from Burnely for a baptism? Is there a Hag farm anywhere? I think this lot are from Barrowford and surrounding area

Out of Area Baptisms/ Registrations.
Lots of reasons why a birth/christening/baptism might be away from the normal mat/ paternal home.
Mother Staying with friend/family/husbands family at time of birth. Other historic reason to be elsewhere - birth hospital/home/midwife. Work - particulary if one parent a jobing builder. I have distant cousin family with Birth in Hampshire due to Wife's Cousin living there while Husband was working in Sussex when normal residence was Hammersmith. Father was a Painter/Decorator. Year was about 1880s so travel not easy or cheap even with the railways at that time.

Ing Farm is on the road between Barrowford and Colne at the corner of Barrowford reservoir. It is just called Ing on earlier maps. Not sure about Hag, though there is a Hagg Street in Colne.
I have come across an early 19thC Colne solicitor called Henry Bolton in many old documents relating to the area and I am sure he had connections to Barrowford.... I wonder if he is one of yours??
I have just had a look at the index I am working on of property deeds in the Colne area and a Henry Bolton is connected to a place called Ing Heys.

I am misleading you there, Ing Heys is at Trawden. Sorry!

Jules, the only thing I can contribute is that 'hag' has connections with peat so it sounds like a moorland location.

The Ing farm sounds good, as does the Hagg Road / Street / Lane place. I am convinced by the number of baptisms for the family that we are in the right location between Colne and Barrowford, bapt in Colne and later census' in Barrowford. It is in the census that my Thomas Bolton says he is from Hag / Marsden (born 1788) and he was living at Ing when his children were baptized circa 1825. As for related to the other Notlobs (Monty Python fans) one of Thomas' sons was called Henry, although a different Henry to that mentioned above who I have seen reference to. Could be a connection...

Just been reposting my holly articles for Eileen and on reading them again I remembered that 'hagg' was an alternative name for 'holm', often used for an island but in this case as a name for an isolated stand of trees. In the case I was looking at these were Holly trees cultivated for browse wood as winter feed for cattle and sheep. Doesn't help you directly but might give you a clue.

Jules, I'm not certain about this, but if it is described as Hag, Marsden then it is more likely to be Haggate.

Time line called for I think.

Hagg was a farm in Gt Marsden, just south of Colne Water, and thus near Colne. See 'Oldmaps' website, e.g. the first 6 inch map from the 1840s, west (and just south) of the Waterside area.

Gt Marsden was of course in Colne parish.

The 'modern' Hagg St is there, and is now I suppose part of Colne.

Nice one Rex, I should have known that...this Marsden business is confusing! I have just dug out a copy of a (modern) map of mediaeval Marsden which came from Colne Library. Hagg isn't marked, but there is a Haggate Gate marked a bit further West beside the Burnley Road, not far past Whackersall. I hadn't noticed that before.

I once got into trouble at the Haggate pub......
