That was a blast from the past Peter. 1949 I think.... Thank Janet for me please.....

(Another) Janet. She died seven years ago today so strictly speaking that's not a forgotten corner.

The same scene in 2010. The trees have grown so big they obscure what was a view out over the town. This is common all over the town. Many more trees and bigger than 100 years ago.

This is Tubber Hill just before the junction of Colne Road with High Lane. If you did a pic here today you would see a similar effect as that at the bandstand, far more trees now than then....

This wasn't as innocuous as it seems at first glance. It was one of the many 'pacifiers' based on Laudanum which were used to make infants sleep so they were easier to look after. Thousands were killed by them. A forgotten corner we hope.

In 1932 Procter's furniture stores were in the shop next to the New Ship Chapel but shortly afterwards moved across the road to occupy the old Baptist Chapel.
Later still they moved out of there into a shop on Church Street. All of course now are forgotten corners.

Hacking's bakery in about 1890 shortly before they were moved out because the chapel were building a Sunday School on the site. Notice the oil stain on the wall above the window. That means there was a bearing box in the wall and that in turn means they had a lineshaft driving bakery machinery so they were in a big way even then.

Image

Proof just how successful they were. Here's the purpose built bakehouse shop and living accommodation they built and moved into from the old bakery. For many years Hackings were the premier bakers and outside caterers in the town. Long gone now so it's a forgotten corner.

Havre Park Area in 1963. Lots to look for and comment on in this part of Barlick. In the last 60 years it has changed completely. Start on Bank Street with ambulances parked outside what used to be the depot. Move down onto Valley Road , the larger part of which didn't exist then. The play and green area between Bank Street and what would become Valley Road was waste ground.
Wellhouse Mill and Brown's old foundry have gone and there has been building on the area across on the other side of Long Ing Lane/Rainhall Road.
That's why I call this topic forgotten corners.... :biggrin2:

My adventure playground when I was a lad. This 1963 aerial was done on a Monday as the washing is out on most of the frames of Barlick. I can see that mum had hers out at the back of Craven Street. If you look closely on the right on the road down to Wellhouse shed you can just see the Nissan hut that one of the local joiners had. Left of this, the chipping road down to the old foundry is what we called "the flat part" and we had goals on the roller door and a wicket on the wall to the left. Milk cooler is visible on Valley Road just before it ended with a cinder path through to Long Ing. The former pens between there and Bank Street was our adventure playground. Three big trees, the middle one with a swing. We could climb all the trees and used to have races to see who could stick their hand out of the top first. We always had a camp fire going and we used to have our bonfire on there on plot night. The lower side of the path still had hen pens and allotments. My mum and dads patch is just off the bottom of the image. The field in the lower left is where the stable and former farm was and we used to ride the big white horse "rocket" in the field. They had a pile of boxes to help you mount, he was a big horse.

Hee hee! I thought that one might tick a few boxes for you Ian, I hadn't noticed the washing.... Nice one!

Here's another image from 60 years ago.... Clough Shed and surrounds. Clough Mill was Silentnight's HQ after the fire in Butts, You can see one of their Guy Otter vans in the loading bay.
As usual the more you look the more you see. North Street chapel, the police Station and the Manchester Road Co-op still open as a shop. The demolition of the properties up the left side of Wapping is complete but there were still some at the end of Calf Hall Road whose days were numbered.
Enjoy!

Here's an interesting image of the gasworks in 1963. We have converted to North Sea Gas and the grid by then and all the equipment at the old gasworks was redundant and was being scrapped. The retort houses have gone and the dismantling of the largest of the gasholders is well under way.

My Uncle Bob was in the Skipton Road works then with his building and joinery business. I think that may be his caravan parked up in the yard. Bottom floor of the building was all the building supplies and wood store at the far end from the road. Joinery works with al the machines was upstairs. The upstairs room at the front of the building above the office were used for French polishing the coffins he made. Not allowed to open the door in there unless by appointment by Bob! Now that is a forgotten corner.

These images are going down so well I shall pursue them.....

Wellhouse Mill Yard was for many years an entity in itself. It was used for car parking and had some small businesses in the western corner. Also evident in this image is the extent of the Vicarage Gardens. It was by then the Masonic Hall and newton told me that at one time there was a garden railway layout in the grounds but I have never see4n any evidence of it.

Lots to study here! The railway station and sidings in 1963. The modern road from Forester's Buildings up to Post Office Corner isn't there or the village green. Cravenside hasn't been built and we still had Stanley's Crumpets next to the sidings. There is so much information in this pic if yo zoom in and interrogate it!

Yes Ian, the remains of the standpoint that served it used to be in the shrubbery next to where the shelter was.

Image

During the war, by statute, every place of work needed a reinforced air raid shelter. This was the one at Bancroft and in 1977 it was used as a fireproof oil and dirty waste store, that was when the windows were put in.
(Dirty waste, particularly if soaked in vegetable oil like linseed has a distressing habit of auto-combusting if left in a mass. That's why dirty waste could not be stored in the mill.)

Seeing the amateurish graffiti on the "Mens Shelter" (where did the women go)? I would like to show you a bit of the more modern skilful sort.

This is my big lad's shed - from ground level it blends in with the adjacent horizon. Very clever.

When I was a lad this Wolseley was the standard police car. It was regarded as the most powerful car by a British manufacturer. They didn't have a siren, just the chrome plated bell on the front bumper which rang very loudly and fast like a door bell, not individual chimes such as you got from the hand operated bell on the fire engines.
