Milk Bar

An after dinner natter about the old days led to my wife mentioning a Milk Bar that she used to go to in Nelson.
This reminded me of a similar institution (I think) that I used to go to in the late '60's/early'70's which was situated at the junction of Skipton Rd and St James Rd.

It was the venue for my courting as my girlfriend at the time worked at the supermarket just up the road from it.
I see that it remains a cafe but has it still got that ambiance?
I wonder...........................

You auld softie...
Can't think of anywhere that conjures up any warm and fuzzy memories for me..except recent visits to very old picture theatres where I used to take my son when he was a little boy. Would love to spend the day with him as a nipper again.
But as far as dating goes, there is nowhere I think of fondly. Isn't that strange?

Joyce's Yankee Bar and still going I think. She was still serving not that long ago. Richard (with the beard and red stick) used to go in there every day)

Just about remember the milk bar in Nelson I think it was called Slaters.not very often I could afford to indulge but when I found myself the caretaker of half a crown
then my treat would be an ice cream float, and a milk shake. Strange that once I got a job I gave up the milk for Masseys bitter,in the Engineers arms....Mike

I used to go in Slaters with my daughters & my mum for hot vimto & kunzle cakes - same thing at a shop down Dockray in Colne - can't get kunzle cakes now.

My favourite place for hot vimto used to be Nelson indoor market,I still occasionally have one at home. This got me thinking to what else I may be missing out on can you still get stew and hard, not some thing i've seen for a very long time....Mike.

Slaters in Nelson was a milk bar, cafe and ice cream parlour. It still sells ices and milk shakes today but the cafe has gone. There used to be, in the 60s-70s, UCP cafes in Nelson - there were two or three I think. They sold anything associated with local farms. The name was 'United Cattle Products' UCP. There was another milk bar in Nelson back in the 60s but the name fails me at the moment. Will try and find out its name.

As teenagers we would visit the Carla Beck milk bar in Skipton. Some of the milk bars had areas roped off for jiving.
