David. That could be right. For years Hartleys was plagued by complaints about the smell from the high temperature cloth processing machines. Newton used to look after the boilers for the evening shift and he told me that they used high temperature oil for heat transfer and the pipes almost glowed in the dark.

Dull and colourless for the last few days. Here's some colour from the sunset on 11th March.

It has been a bit gloomy hasn't it. You might get a snow scene at weekend!

There was a brief glimpse of the sun kissing the slope of Weets shortly before sunset yesterday evening.

The first day of spring is not only grey and dull, but wild and wet. Here's another of the sunset from the other day.

At this time of year, sunsets are more or less due west of us. It's notable how much further north of west the sun sets each day. If you compare this picture of last night's sunset with the one taken on 11th March, you can see the point at which it sets has moved well over Waddington Fell.

At the Spring Equinox the Earth is not tilted on its axis in relation to the Sun, hence the sunrise due West. As the year progresses so does the tilt which moves the position that the sun rises and sets over the horizon when viewed from the same position. The ancients knew of this or at least had observed the effects which allowed them to align their temples and other structures with astronomical precision.

I remember well what a pain it was driving back to Barlick out of the East Riding at sunset against the sun. Possibly worse in a high cab than in a car.

Stanley mentioned earlier in the week that I might get a chance of a snow picture.

Not quite managed it this morning; just a very light dusting on Weets.

Here's a closer view of the summit of Weets.

Anyone recognise the person stood near the cairn to the left of the trig point at about 7.20am?

I wonder if anyone can spot what's missing from that last photo? (And several earlier ones.) I only noticed yesterday; so much for my observational skills.

Yes, Pete's got it.

When I look back, the last picture I have with the wind turbine standing was on 9th January... it took me until 24th March to realise that it wasn't still standing.

Little doubt the season has changed. Only problem to watch out for now is that East wind. It can get established at this time of year and burns off the new grass as fast as it pokes up.
