Walkerholme

Post by yungfil »

Hi People,

Does anyone have any information on the location of Walkerholme (or Walker Holme). It appears in the Colne PRs mid-17c (1630-1670) as the home of Henry Walton. Holme normally relates to an area by water. I have a suspicion that it may have been in Foulridge that was flooded when the various reservoirs came about, but I can't find a map showing the area before they were formed. The Waltons had a long standing in Foulridge (Ball House, etc), but they also had a long standing in many other areas 🙄. Years ago, in the 90s, I made a note of Walkerholme being in Barrowford but can't remember where I got this from!!

Any help would be appreciated. Phil.

Interesting! Hello Phil and welcome to One Guy. I've just had a look through Fay Oldland's book on the History of Foulridge and there is no mention of Walker Holme. She states that the Walton family moved into Ball House from Marsden in 1710 and also has Waltons at Reedymoor Farm.
I'll see what I can discover in Colne Library when I'm there next Wednesday morning.

Do you have a baptism date for Henry?

Hi Wendy,

I've solved my own problem!

I found a written reply to a phone call to Lancashire Libraries in 1997, which states:

In reply to your telephone call asking the whereabouts of Walkerholme, Barrowford, we have found a field of that name, now part of Barrowford Park.
Walker is another name for fuller, one who fulls cloth. There is a mention in the Clitheroe Court Rolls 5 April 1525 of 'Le Holmes of Barowfore', and Jesse Blakey's Annals and stories of Barrowford 1929 says 'the name Holmes for the flat lands here, show that the lands were marshy, forming river islands'. Many of the fields beside the river in Barrowford are "something -holme".
On September 19 1922 Barrowford Council bought Lower Park Hill farm house, farm buildings, Caul cottage, 2 other cottages used as storerooms and the land consisting of Meadow, Walker-Holme and Rye Bank. The house and buildings are now called Park Hill and are the Pendle Heritage Centre.
Park Mili in 1780 was offered for sale as a cloth of fulling mill and belonged to Park Hill estate, in 1803 it was valued with 4 cottages at £27.
Find enclosed 2 maps, "Holme" is marked on one and 14 on the other and is the field Walkerholme, the Ordnance Survey reference is SD 860396.

So that's where I got Barrowford from!!

Thanks for your help, regards, Phil

And now you mention it that information passed over my desk when I was in charge of interpretation at Pendle Heritage. But you can't remember everything! I'm so glad you found it, I know how things like that can nag. :good:
