EXTRA SENSORY PERCEPTION
24 February, 2005
One of the problems with any discussion about ESP is that it generates more heat than light. It seems to attract people who have no interest in the truth only bludgeoning others into agreeing with them. The sad thing is that they do not need to do this. Any hypothesis is valid until proved otherwise, this is the basis of all scientific research. If you want to prove a theory, the best route is to fail to show that it can't be true, not by trying to prove it is valid.
I work on this principle and whilst I can't espouse a full blown belief in ESP and am aware that a many people have spent a lot of time working on this and have not arrived at anything near proof, I believe that examples of unexplained perception do occur. I rang a mate of mine on Tuesday who was trying to ring me. I rang another friend yesterday and her first words were 'We were just talking about you, were you're ears burning?' OK, could be just coincidence but then again?
Quantum physics may be getting close to giving us some sort of an explanation. A few years ago when String Theory was posited I was fascinated because the only way the maths worked was if a constant was included in the calculation. Its value was seven I think. What really excited my imagination was that the researchers were pretty sure this constant referred to the number of dimensions. At the moment I can only recognise four, height, width, depth and time. The concept of there being more is mind-boggling.
Things got even more interesting when a researcher looking at Einstein's last research notes realised that he had identified the flaws in his General Theory and was seeking an explanation. He was starting on the road to String Theory. Then there was another development, further calculations suggested that String Theory had to be modified, they called the result 'Membrane Theory', 'Brane theory' for short. The difference between this and String Theory was that the constant is an infinite number. In other words, there could be an infinite number of dimensions. It gets even more complicated because some of these dimensions could be anti-matter.
Put very simply this means that there is the possibility of an infinite number of dimensions and they seem to be membranes or flat sheets existing in parallel with all the other dimensions. Further, they didn't seem to be perfectly flat, there are aberrations or lumps on them and there is a possibility that this could allow them to touch their neighbours and interact. If an anti-matter dimension interacted with a 'normal' dimension this could produce a chain reaction which could be an explanation of 'The Singularity' which is the name researchers have given to the event which caused the Big Bang. On a less cataclysmic level, this interaction between parallel states could explain hitherto unexplained phenomena such as Deja Vu, poltergeists, ghosts and ESP.
Sorry for all that but my point is that a lot of money and intelligence is being directed towards finding a Universal Theory to replace Einstein's General Theory which displaced Newtonian Physics, the model upon which out modern world's science is founded. This being the case it would be a very brave (or stupid) person who clung to the belief that what we call ESP can't exist. There are small clues emerging that seem to support the hypothesis. At the nano level, quantum physics seems to affect the properties of materials. Silica becomes stronger than steel and electrical resistance vanishes. All these new technologies are linked and are going to be immensely important to the human race. If someone as brilliant as Hawkins can suggest that a programmed nano bot could be injected into a Black Hole, emerge in a parallel universe and set up a factory to clone our universe in that dimension how can anyone doubt that there is at least the possibility that ESP exists? So there!
