OBITUARIES
Re: OBITUARIES
Good man - stand by your perceptions - why should yours be any worse or inferior than anyone else's?
One man's 'layers of scholarly intrigue' is another man's BS. Stand up and be counted.

Re: OBITUARIES
Someone named Shane MacGowan of The Pogues has died. Shane McGowan
I know very little about him, but had a interest in the name of the group he was in. I just found out very recently that the correct spelling of the original Gaelic from which the group's name derives is 'Pog mo Thoin'. I learned the phrase a very long time ago. from Aunty Josie's mother (a second generation Irish immigrant) who used it regularly.
RIP
Henry Kissinger has also died aged 100. (Now that's a good target to aim for).
Too complex for me to comment, but didn't they call his Nobel Peace Prize "the death of irony"?
Tribute was paid by Tom Tugendhat on radio this morning who said he was a 'close friend' . That says a lot. He is sinister.
RIP.

Mostly famous for the 'Christmas' song Fairytale of New York, with Kirsty McColl. To be honest I'm surprised he made it this long.Tripps wrote: ↑30 Nov 2023, 12:48 Someone named Shane MacGowan of The Pogues has died. Shane McGowan

Take care. Treading near to dangerous territory. . .

Re: OBITUARIES
No one has mentioned the death of Alistair Darling, who became a Lothian Region Councillor then an MP in Edinburgh whilst we were in the area. A decent man I think, like Robin Cook who was our MP at that time.
Re: OBITUARIES
I thought two was "sufficient unto the day" and felt sure someone else would mention Alastair Darling.
Everyone seems genuinely shocked at the news.
I agree - and the tributes paid seem to endorse that he was one of the good guys. Not much competition among politicians for the title though.

Re: OBITUARIES
That was my impression of him also Wendy.
If we were rabid footy fans we'd be banging on about Terry Venables.....
PS. Yes David, I commented elsewhere on Kissinger. If you ask at the library they will find you a copy of 'Sideshow' by William Shawcross which tells the story of the bombing of Laos and Cambodia. Totally illegal and it's estimated that hundreds of thousands were killed. Kissinger and Nixon made the decision to bomb them back into the Stone Age.

Re: OBITUARIES
See THIS obituary for Brigit Forsyth (no I hadn't heard of her either.)
Actress Brigit Forsyth, best known for appearing in TV sitcoms Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads and Still Open All Hours, has died aged 83. Forsyth, who was born in Edinburgh, began her career in 1971 when she starred in the film The Night Digger, a thriller written by Roald Dahl. Later that decade, she played Thelma in comedy Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? and a Likely Lads film. Her other credits included TV dramas Playing the Field and Boon.
Obviously I should have known who she was. Never mind, RIP.

Re: OBITUARIES
See THIS for the obituary for Glenys Kinnock. I am sorry to see her go, in my book she was at least as good a socialist as her husband Neil who has survived her.....

Re: OBITUARIES
Define 'socialist',
I think perhaps they have both, (and son Stephen - accused of tax evasion in Denmark) gone a bit past "to each according to his needs"

I don't need to David. Look at what I said.... that she was 'at least as good' as Neil.

Re: OBITUARIES
A bit of a sophisticated and delphic argument for me. A future in politics surely beckons.
I'd say neither is in the same 'socialist' league as (say) Dennis Skinner.
It must surely be true that all three Kinnocks have become multi- millionaires by virtue of pursuing 'socialism'.

Re: OBITUARIES
I refused to watch Love Story, probably because I don't like 'tear jerkers' but more likely because that famous phrase "love is never having to say you are sorry" struck me as being total c**p.
Barry Lyndon, however, is an all time favourite film.
