I don't have an image of the underwater part of the stern of a narrow boat for you but it had a name, can anyone tell me what it was?

Yes Kev! Exactly right. This one is said to be a rule with Yorkshire measures but I have never heard them before.

Breaking strength and done with adding weights from memory, seen one in use a long time ago.

Sorry no Ian and I am being too demanding. It was a balance for determining the thickness of yarn. Known as 'The Count' it was the number of standard hanks of yarn wound on a companion machine there were in a pound.
(A hank is 840 yards.)
