Gates entries
1851 census.
William Gates. Greenberfield locks. 55 years, coal agent and lockkeeper.
Information from Brenda Harry, 2003: William Lappage Gates was born in Thirsk in 1796 and was a hatter there before coming to Barnoldswick.

Crew entries
c.1895
in LTP transcript 78/AB/02 Billy Brooks talks about a man called William Crew who had a shop in Church Street who sold boiled peas. He used to lend old saucepans and boilers to strikers to make a noise with when they were picketing. Kelly 1889 notes William Crew as shopkeeper of Church Street, grocer. Barrett 1887 gives William Crew as ‘picture framer’ of 7 Church Street. No entry in 1893 but in 1899 a William Crew is noted as fried fish dealer of Brook Street. No entry in 1902.

1887/1902.
John Crew mentioned in 1887 Barrett as picture framer of 13 Rainhall Road. Basically same entry in directories for years 1889/1896. No entry in 1902.

I have a picture of Butts Mill engine taken by ‘Crew and Lane’ photographers, Barnoldswick.

1848/1859
James Nuttall mentioned as elector of Barnoldswick in 1848 and 1859. Address given as Coates. [see Enos Nuttall]

1853
Enos Nuttall, the Archbishop of the West Indies spent his early days in Barnoldswick. He was the son of James Nuttall who lived in the middle cottage of the three above the canal bridge at Coates. He attended Butts National School until he was 13 years of age.

1851 census.
James Nuttall, white limer of Coates. 31 years.
Thomas Nuttall of Wapping, 20 years, plasterer and slater. Ellen wife, 20, power loom weaver cotton. Martha, daughter, 8 months.

c1860.
James Nuttall mentioned as being in dispute with William Bracewell (Billycock) over water rights connected with Old Coates Mill. In the Imperial gazetteer of the same year he is noted as shopkeep[er and farmer of Barnoldswick. [He had bought Old Coates and the farmland hoping to re-open the mill but after losing the case with Bracewell he built an entirely new mill on Coates Bridge in about 1865. This was over the years, Dobbson’s Dairy, a velvet weaving firm, Carr’s Printers and now is Hope Engineering.

James Nuttall mentioned as being of Thornton in Craven, Gent.

1890/1891
Robert Nuttall invited to tender for lime washing at Wellhouse Mill. Calf Hall Shed Company minute books, 13 August 1890. Invited to tender for the removal of ventilators from the roof of Wellhouse Mill on same date. Tender for 322-15-0 for slating the engine house roof at Wellhouse 12/11/1890. There was a dispute over the extras on his bill for this 03/06/1891.

Mention of Thomas Nuttall (exors of), plasterers, slaters , concreters and cement merchants of 24 Chapel Street.

1896.
Robert Nuttall mentioned as slater and plasterer of Rainhall Road in Barrett directory, 1896.

c.1915
Alfred Nuttall is mentioned as second in command of the Barlick fire brigade under Bert Strickland as Chief Officer. See ‘This is my life’ by Jack Griffin.
