Wigglesworth index entries. 28 September 2004
Only one village named Wigglesworth in England. A couple of miles west of Long Preston. So fairly safe to assume the family’s roots start from there.
1201/1220. Early Yorkshire Charters pp. 178 ff.
1201/1220. Gift by Ralph, son of William de Scotton to Robert the Clerk, rector of Long Preston of all his right in the vill of Wigglesworth, namely the lordship of the whole vill saving the right of his land, Elias de Amundeville.
1215/1230. The lordship of the vill passes to Fountains Abbey.
1671.
Inventory of Robert Ellis dated 19/08/1671. Henry Wigglesworth signs as seneschal. (the seneschal was the steward of the manor and had control of its running on behalf of the lord)
1711.
History of the Baptist Church in Barnoldswick. Page 46. James Wigglesworth is noted as being one of the members of the church who invited John Wilson to come as preacher. (He never came but went to Rawdon in 1715)
1741
John Wigglesworth mentioned as freeholder and elector of Barnoldswick in a roll of 1741.
1756
Joseph Wigglesworth assessed for land tax of £1-4-0 in 1753 and £2-8-0 in 1756/1757/1760.
1834.
Pigot records Henry Wigglesworth as being the landlord of the Greyhound Hotel in Barnoldswick.
1835.
Henry Wigglesworth noted in electoral roll as an elector of Barnoldswick. Address given as Syke House (at that time farm and public house. Now known as Foster’s Arms) Same entry in 1837.
1837.
White’s directory for 1837 notes John Wigglesworth as being a Spinner at Mitchell’s Mill. (Later called Clough Mill)
1841 electoral roll.
John Wigglesworth noted as elector. Henry Wigglesworth does not appear on this roll. John mentioned later in same roll as elector of Syke House. Elector of Barnoldswick in 1859.
1851 census
Henry Wigglesworth noted as living at Calf Hall. Aged 57, ag labourer and his wife Ann, 62.
1851 census.
John Wigglesworth noted as living in Wapping, age 65, farmer of 17 acres, employs one labourer. Charlotte his daughter, unmarried and aged 23 lived with him as housekeeper.
1861 census
John Wigglesworth noted as living in Paradise Street, 73 years, retired cotton manufacturer. His wife was Fanny, 58 years.
c. 1900
Atkinson in his memoir ‘Old Barlick’ says that “Kit Wigglesworth of Syke house could boast how he saw a Boggart on Henhouse Brow but kept the real secret to himself.”
BROGDEN HALL.
Address given for James Inman, elector of Brogden in 1837.
Address given for Thomas Smith in directory of 1857 and electoral roll of 1859.
1851 census notes Thomas Smith, 40 years, farmer of 66 acres.
1871 census notes Thomas Smith, 60 years as being farmer of 66 acres and employing one man.
Barrett, 1896 notes Hayes Lawson as farmer at Brogden Hall.
The Hall still exists on Brogden Lane, the old Roman road running across the North end of Barlick. The Ordnance Survey reference is SD 854 472.
