WALKER INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 06/03/06

1422 onwards
(Court Rolls of the Honour of Clitheroe) Robert de Walker was demised of a fulling mill at Colne in 1422/1423. A compotus of 1422/23 records that Robert de Walker rents for eightpence a small selion of land in Colne upon which the tenter yard of the Walk Mill was lately situated with another parcel of land at the top where the fulling mill was so lately built, so demised etc. in the Rolls of the Halmote of 6th Henry IV (1405)

1770
John Walker paid Land Tax in Barlick of 11/7 ½ no address given.

1835
Samuel Walker noted as an elector of Salterforth in 1835. Address given as Woodend Fold. Ditto in 1837, 1841.

1851 census
James Walker, head, 71, farmer of 28 acres with 2 labourers. Born Salterforth. (Salterforth included County Brook)

1871 census
Robert Walker, Wapping, 34, engine tenter. Thomas Walker, Newtown, 47, blacksmith.

1927
Empress Mills (1927) Ltd was registered on 5th March 1927 with capital of £3000. In 2003 it was still in business at Trawden producing sewing thread. The founding directors were Wilfred Ewart Nutter and Rupert Nutter. Also listed as first directors were James Henry Walker of ‘Bella Vista’ Colne, cotton salesman and John Young Ball of Ash Grove, Laneshawbridge, cotton salesman.

LTP. 82/HD/05. P. 13. Harold Duxbury talks about blacksmiths and mentions Tom Walker as being a blacksmith in Barlick. In ‘A Way of Life’ p.88, Tom Duckworth talks about Tom Walker and Dick Jagger as having a blacksmith’s shop in Clough Mill Yard. I can remember Alan Parker telling me that he served his apprenticeship with Tom Walker.

1931.
Craven Herald 30/01/31. Reporting on the Skipton lockout during the More Looms dispute it is noted that one of the firms who were not members of the Skipton Manufacturing Association and who continued to work was T Counter, Walker Son and Perkins of Alexandra Shed, Skipton.

c.1920
LTP.78/AH/08. Reference to a ‘Taffy’ Walker whose home life was so bad he preferred to be in the workhouse.
