LIST OF ENGINES BY JOHN PETRIE, ROCHDALE
In 1987 when I was dismantling the Whitelees engine, then displayed at Holcroft Foundry, Whitehall Street, Rochdale, I found a photocopy of this list in the house. I have no knowledge of its antecedents and can only vouch for the accuracy of one or two of the engines of which I have personal knowledge. So for good or ill, here is a transcript of that photocopy.
ENGINES OF JOHN PETRIE
STEAM ENGINE BUILDERS OF
WHITEHALL STREET ROCHDALE.

INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY
G B WILLIAMSON ESQ. M I MECH E
[Whilst transcribing this list I keep coming across entries referring to ‘spur wheel and nut’. In one case the ‘nut’ is described as being 24” in diameter. At the back of my brain there is a vague recollection of having seen this word used to refer to the small pinion driven by a spur gear. I have searched my old texts in vain but can’t find a hard reference. However I’d recommend that until you know better, think of the ‘nut’ as the pinion. Another term referred to frequently is ‘expansion gear’, I understand this to be a reference to valve gear but have no hard basis for this.]
