Thanks for all your thoughts, much appreciated.

Well, I'm happy to tell you I've made it through this episode and left hospital this morning. Isn't that a turnaround? I went in on Monday and every morning I was gasping for breath and thinking I couldn't go on. At 3am this morning I was sat outside on the balcony gasping for breath.4 hours later, I got up and my facial swelling had gone down and I didn't need painkillers to start the day. In fact I didn't need anything. My heart, lungs, blood, liver are OK, my kidneys are slightly affected but that could be the medicine I've taken over the last 5 days. I had a CT scan of my lungs up to my chin yesterday, to see what was causing my nagging cough. Nothing nasty revealed. The doctor gave me the optiion of going home and coming back in 7 days or remaining in hospital under observation for a couple of days. I'm going home!
I feel knocked out and frail, but maybe I'll see Santa this year.I can't believe the change in 4 hours.
And the bill for this treatment? 1023 rmb = ยฃ116.49. Cheap, excellent treatment but the hospital was a bit shabby. :biggrin2:

That's such good news Graham and has made my day. I realise that this doesn't mean you are booking in for the next available marathon but at least you can stagger to the keyboard. As I said only this morning you have been heavy on my mind. Thanks for checking in and please keep us up to speed.
I wish you all the best.
(Can't help thinking; has anybody suggested it was a consequence of your DIY medication?)

My trip to the MRI machine at St James's in Leeds went OK. Virtually new facility with a new Siemens scanner in a purpose built building. Noticeably smaller than earlier versions I have had the pleasure of, no quicker, 20 mins then a further 10 with contrast, but that just the nature of the requirement for a brain scan. Considerably quieter though. Older models I have been in could be described as a cross between the Speedway and the Waltzer at the fair!

Anyway a new facility owned by the hospital but staffed by private medical personnel as the NHS don't have the staff to run it. It replaces the one that used to be in a large portacabin in the car park. Nurse clinician did a good job with the cannula, you cant tell she had been there.

Thanks for that Cathy. Actually, Chinatyke, I was back from holiday so no excuse but it's all happened so fast. I look at the Medical Matters thread frequently but missed for a couple of days and in that short time Chinatyke becomes an emergency then bounces back before I've even noticed. Sorry about that old pal, and there I was writing a post the other day complimenting China (the country, not you) for the way it's banning the building of over-high skyscapers and demanding more attractive buildings. I was wondering why you hadn't made a comment but never dreamed you might have been in hospital on oxygen! Anyway, well done for such a speedy recovery and welcome back, we need your wit and your challenges to keep us on our toes. Onwards and upwards!

I was thinking about that post on high rise Peter.
Meanwhile in another part of the forest my latest great grand daughter has slotted her head into the birth canal. (How can they tell these things?) I am told that this means it could be earlier than anyone thought. Tension mounts.

Thanks to everyone. They must not have wanted me downstairs :laugh5:

My wife and family have gone through a lot of grieving this week. I honestly can't account for the turn around in 4 hours. Now I've got to rebuild my strength. This leads to a question, was I wrong in telling them?

Ian, I noticed the reduced size of the scanner, more like a big washing machine, quiet and quick. I thought it was the laundry room when I went passed it.

Aye just a tad larger than the big un's in the Launderette or so it seemed. I commented to the medics yesterday and they tell me that it is only 10cm smaller than previous models. Although I am fairly sure the outside dimensions are much smaller. They said it allowed even higher resolution scans. If the hole in the middle is smaller it won't be good for those that are claustrophobic about them. I hear some proper tales of woe on the support site that I watch. Some folk have palpitations, panic attacks and need sedation, doesn't bother me at all. They had problems with the music feed to the headphones yesterday but the talk back worked OK. I reckon if the music was on I would have fallen asleep. Half an hour with your head in the tunnel is nowt for peace of mind. CAT scanners are much quicker but cant give the fine detail that the MRI does, depends what they are looking for though.

I went to have my right eye examined today as I have had occasional bright flashing spots to the right side of the eye.
I feared a detached retina which would have required laser surgery.

It turns out that I have "posterior vitreous detachment" which occurs when the gel that fills the eyeball separates from the retina.
Quite common for people in my age group and, if monitored regularly, shouldn't be a problem.

I have that in my right eye Mick, it happened suddenly a couple of years back. I still see the flashes when I go from light into the dark and it has left me with extra floaters in that eye which are a nuisance.

I had something like that, not flashes but pools of light, but mine turned out to be a precursor of a full blown detached retina and I had the interesting experience of going blind in that eye overnight. That gets your attention. Luckily, thanks to an emergency operation and a good surgeon at Burnley I got most of my vision in that eye back.
I had floaters in both eyes Wendy but as part of the operation they empty the eye and when I finally got back to normal all the floaters had gone. I asked them if they could change the oil in the other eye but they declined....

How are you doing Graham?

See THIS BBC report about the success of the HPV vaccination against cervical cancer. "The human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccine is cutting cases of cervical cancer by nearly 90%, the first real-world data shows. Cancer Research UK described the findings as "historic", and said it showed the vaccine was saving lives".

I came home from the Bosom Friends Coffee morning at lunchtime to find a letter behind the door. It was from Leeds and had the blue franking that the hospital correspondence has. I was only in the MRI scanner just over a week ago so I opened it with some trepidation.

Opening paragraph allayed my fears and reported no changes compared to last years scan. The letter was direct from St James's Oncology department and was signed off by Roisin who is one of my two named Meningioma Nurse Specialists. So all OK for another year, I will get further scans at 4, 5, 7 and 10 years. Fastest turnaround that I have had on any of my scan results. :good:
