Mentioned in Despatches

Post by Gloria »

My grandfather was R D Kippax, Brigade Quartermaster Sergeant in Royal Artillery in WW2.

Campaign Medals
1939-45 War Medal
1939-1945 Star

Awarded
Mentioned in Despatches

Theatre/Reason for award
Italy (including Monte Cassino, Anzio, Salerno, San Marino etc)

Is there anywhere on line to find out what he was mentioned in Despatches for? And what is the "Star" Campaign Medal?
I got the above information from www.forces-war-records.co.uk

It may give the information in his service records which you can apply for. Alternatively you could try the regiments history department they will hold the documentary record of the regiments actions. I assume you will have his service number which should be quoted along with any other information you already have.

I am intending to chase up my dads service record as I only have scant information on the circumstance of his B.E.M. (Military) award.

1939 - 45 Star is a campaign medal more information here:

Yes I have his number, thanks Ian. In this day and age of everything being "online", I thought perhaps they're somewhere I haven't looked.

I don't think so Gloria there are one or two sites that say they give access to service records but they are subscription. You might just as well apply for the records directly. Here are the files I got for applying for service records, it was £30 the last time I looked. It might be worth rechecking.

Thank you, I have a sub to find my past but haven't got any further on there. I shall print the paperwork Ian gave the link to and send it off.

The dispatches were published in the london gazette. Ironically it's highly unlikely the dispatch will mention your grandfather's name but they can be viewed below.

He was of course MiD - your grandfather's name is on this page -
