There's been more planting in the gardens during the last couple of weeks, following the trimming back of the ivy on the back wall.

Today, we've been barrowing more muck into the beds in preparation for a big planting spree tomorrow (Friday).

Here's Lesley Gilbert, who is the chief architect of the planting scheme, tipping muck onto one of the two diamond beds.

Here's the rear bed after the ivy has been cropped.

The snowdrops planted earlier are now dying back. The small amount of planting evident in the bed doesn't look a lot, but with all the digging over and titivation of the soil with muck and grit, was only achieved after considerable collective effort!

All being well, the next stage of planting will be completed tomorrow or Saturday.

Thought I'd revive this post, firstly to say that I think the improvement to the gardens has been a great success and to remind me to take some pics of the new sensory garden.

I have watched the refurbisment develop overt he last couple of months, walking past most days up to school. I am still slightly confused with one of the cut outs in the sensory sculpture, turbine is easily recognised, cant make my mind up yet about the other.

Here it is, still a few bits to do. The cutouts in the corten steel are a mill, a turbine and what looks like a bucket...

Yes, I get the mill and the turbine but I think the third may be a mattress so maybe linked to Silentnight or is Hope in there somewhere?

Could it be molten metal being poured from a pot? A reference to Esse.

Looks like cast iron running into pig moulds on the casting floor. The object in the foreground looks like a core from one of the bores at the waterworks on High Lane. The stub of tree trunk reminds me that there is something in the etymology of Bracewell and Stock that refers to a tree stump but I can't remember what!

Yes, there is one of the bore hole cores and the tree trunk is sliced into vertical sections and reassembled as a trunk, cant see it from the angle of Kevs picture.

I'll grab a pic of the 'expanded' tree tomorrow. In the meantime here's a closer pic of the corten steel, I reckon the bottom right is molten metal being poured. The top is definitely mill related (Bancroft Engine House?) and bottom left is turbine blades.

From the closer view, top one is an engine house and a chimney making a lot of smoke. Bottom right is a ladle of molten iron being poured and the other is probably a representative jet engine fan blades.

It's a sensory garden so more surfaces to explore, the stump has a portion of the outer bark missing on one side so a smooth surface of the inner wood as well as the trunk, bark and man made edges. I suppose you need to visit with a blindfold to appreciate it fully.

He had a thing for owls until he had the opportunity to touch one, it made him shudder and he wouldn't touch it anymore...

Must get round to photograph the gardens, we should never forget what they are all about.

There was an Eagle Owl in residence on Whitemoor for about three years when Doc lived at Prospect. I saw it several times and it was a big one. I once followed it up the track in the Yellow Shed and it's wing span was almost as wide as the road! Plenty of rabbits up there for it.......
