Census records Mary Whitaker, 55, grocer of Salterforth. William Whitaker, 26 worsted weaver (HLW almost certain) John Whitaker, 20, worsted weaver. ( Note that Midge Hole Mill on County Brook was weaving by water power at this time and working with wool. I may be wrong about HLW)

First wife of Christopher Bracewell (1818), a Miss Whittaker, of Bacup who was a Baptist, by family connections, obtained a gift, from Mr. Riley of Halifax, of land on which the present commodious Mount Zion Chapel is built, and she laid the foundation stone, but died (1855) before the building was completed

Census reports Robert Whitaker of Old Slack, Thornton in Craven, 52, farmer of 72 acres, born Thornton. Susannah, wife [nee Slater], 51, born Salford. James, Son, 18 born Thornton. Sarah, daughter, 15, born Thornton. {This is part of the antecedents of Susannah Whitaker who married Christopher Bracewell. Not mentioned in evidence but I think Susannah was the youngest member of this family.} (SCG note: Even I don’t understand this last entry, it must have been clear to me at the time. Download the Bracewell PAF file from the OGFB site and search for Whitaker, there are about six connections)

Elizabeth Hartley of Admergill married James Whittaker of Hopwood House Farm in 1880. She died in 1940 and is buried at Bracewell. N Son Richard took over Hopwood House Farm. James farmed Newhouse at Bracewell. John farmed Standedge at Barnoldswick.

Calf Hall Shed Co. minutes 08/01/1890 record the purchase of coal from Michael Whittaker, coal agent, Keighley.

Barrett dir. For 1896 records Vickers Whittaker as overlooker living at 8 Sussex Street, Barnoldswick.

Thomas Whittaker carted water from Gilbert Well (SD88054365) and sold it for a penny a bucket.

Barrett dir. Records Benjamin Whittaker as butcher at 24 Wellhouse Road.

Barrett directory for Barlick reports William Whitaker as Boot and Shoe maker of 29 Church Street.
1908
BET 23/01/2004. Report of the death of Bill Whittaker at his home in Barrowford. He was born in Colne in 1908 and went to the mill at 12 years. He resigned from the Labour Party in 1938 and joined the Communists as he was violently opposed to Fascism and felt more needed to be done. Later he became a full time worker for the Textile Union and continued on a voluntary basis until well into the 19080s.

LTP. 79/AO/01 page 11. Jack Platt talks about stealing apples from Peel Whitaker’s farm on the lane down Salterforth Lane (Park Close or Booth House?)

LTP. 77/AA/07. Jim Pollard talks about Tom Whittaker being blacklisted. He was an overlooker at Dotcliffe Mill during a strike against More Looms in 1932. He helped picket the mill and never worked again in the area. Jim says that the way they were forced out was by making their lives a misery.

Craven Herald 15/07/1932. Reporting on the flood of 12th July the CH records that Benjamin Whittaker, a tackler at John Slater and Sons at Clough Mill had a dramatic escape when the back wall of the shed was broken in by the flood.

Tom Whittaker was a tackler who was a militant in the industrial troubles of the 1930s in Barlick and lost his job by being blacklisted. See LTP. 78/AA/7.
1930s
Walter Whittaker was a fellow caddie with Ernie Roberts at the Barlick golf course. See LTP. 78/AC/06.
1940/1970?
Whitakers farmed Hopwood Farm at Bracewell before the Bargh family took over. One brother, Richard (Dick), had a withered arm but this did not stop him doing a full time job. I think they moved to a farm in Cheshire.
1940/1960
Stanley Whittaker was a garage proprietor in Earby in the old blacksmith’s shop on Skipton Road that used to belong to his uncle, a man called Hodgon.
1970
Ernie Whittaker was a clothlooker at Bancroft Shed during time SCG worked there 1972/78. See LTP 78/AC/10 and 79/AF/02.
