I bumped into a film last night - as you do. It was The Lady in the Van. Quite enjoyed it, but was puzzled (no change there) by the fact that Alan Bennett's 'partner looked to be his identical twin. What are the chances?

Being slow on the uptake and a bit of a literalist - I couldn't decide if they were two different people or it was a dramatic device. Either way - I liked the film and watched all of it.

Looked it up and find that "Much of the dialogue is between two versions of Bennett – his "real self" and his "writer self".

So that's why they looked so alike. I admire how he took a very unpromising situation and seems to have made a £million out of it.

PS Did he deliberately use the word Lady rather than the more PC Woman?
He's a clever devil that Alan Bennett.

We really enjoyed that film.

Good film. I liked Alan Bennett and had the benefit of taking morning tea with him in his little house in Twistleton's Yard, Settle one day when I chauffeured John Miller over there. They were at Giggleswick School together. (Russell Harty was there at the same time...... He once 'made an approach to me' in the gents after fondling my knee under the table at dinner at Gawthhorpe Hall one night.)
(We may be poor but we have seen life. End of name-dropping for today....)
Later.... R 4 is entertaining us with contemporary carols. Include me out! I have gone to Youtube and the Malcolm Sargeant Messiah from Huddersfield Town Hall.

My mate David Moore said that the only thing that was worse than name-dropping was hotel dropping.
Lovely memories watching that video David. That was how I knew her when the was doing gigs in a bar in NY after she was 're-discovered'. Ethel took me there and we went often, I would sit with her, have a drink and talk after she had done her piece. Lovely down to earth woman, we corresponded for a few years until she died. She never really recovered from falling and breaking her hip shortly after I was in NY.
One of the first songs I ever heard her sing was THIS one. Give yourself a treat and listen to it. She was a very sexy woman with a wicked sense of humour.
Later.... I'm listening to a very good Radio 4 programme. Murray Lachlan on 'Peak Hype'. In effect a review of the last 50 years brilliant radio and well worth seeking out.

I watched most of it - like Detectorists, I didn't think I'd like it - but I did. He's very thin isn't he?
Some similarities in style - same 'atmosphere. Was the singing from the Unthanks? I'll be there tomorrow for part two.

I've watched Hobson's choice for about the tenth time. Fantastic contemporary scenes of Salford and I'm All Right Jack, both all the way through in one go. Now we have The African Queen.

Yes it was the Unthanks Tripps and it was very reminiscent of Detectorists. Lovely!

Hobson's Choice is brilliant Ian but I have watched to so many times.....
I had snooker and the development of the DC3. Different folk, different strokes. (Must read my book on Douglas Propliners again.)

I watched a fascinating film last night about the last flight of Lufthansa's senior pilot before retirement. A man at the top of his profession performing impeccably and politely from a position of strength. Wonderful.

Some good films - Bugsy Malone - then The Ipcress Files. Cutting edge espionage at the time now quite an anachronism. Puts 4d in a payphone and presses Button A. The Ipcress music was 'far out' and incomprehensible at the time . Almost mainstream now.

The BBC adaptation of A Christmas Carol, very dark but a good watch in my opinion.

I watched Ipcress as well and the last part of the Eagle has landed. Both classics.

I've saved the programmes about Christine Keeler and will watch them on catch up. I remember it well.
Can you remember the quote from Mandy Rice-Davies? "Well they would say that wouldn't they". Just about summed the whole case up.

Watched the two Keeler programmes and wanted more! I wonder, are there any further episodes to come? It all ended on a bit of a cliff edge.

Watched the first episode of Dracula last night, another to follow on catch up today. Very graphic and convoluted but it will make sense I think eventually!

I caught up with Dracula, very confusing and convoluted! I have saved what I believe is the last episode for tonight. I suspect that van Helsing will appear shortly.

You are right in both cases there Stanley. Stay with it, there is a beginning, middle and end in the last episode
