They look like `desert rose', a crystal variant of gypsum or baryte formed in arid environments. Wikipedia If it is desert rose and is one massive specimen it's magnificent!
Is it anything to do with your Aussie relatives? One of the locations is Australia, such as this one at Woolcunda Station, Coombah, Windeyer Co., NSW: Mindat.org

Like the ones on ethernet cables.

You've got one half of it Gloria, makes a relatively thin wall more stable. A bit like corrugated iron with thin metal. Now, what about the other part of the answer?
