Stanley and Gloria are on the ball - houses built by Arkwright in North Street, Cromford in 1776. Part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Well, that was over quickly - who's next?

It's Churchfields Dobcross, Saddleworth. by a local artist, a lady called Constance Crosby aka Mrs C F Clarke.
I've had a look on Streetview but can't pinpoint it though there are plenty of similar buildings.

I admired it for a long time on my sister in law's wall, and quite unexpectedly she had another one done by the same artist, and gave it me as a gift. I thought, (and still do from time to time) that was a very kind thing to do.

Yes, well its on Bacup Rd Rawtenstall. Didn't know it existed until I paid a visit to the Rawenstall Health Centre. In fact a lot of people don't know Rawtenstall exists. A weavers cottage part of the Rossendale Civic Trust. Weavers Cottage.

I do. I did some 'research' into the family surname a while ago, and the quest repeatedly took me to Rossendale. Need to be cleverer than me to reach any conclusions though, and I never did. That place seems to be the source of it all though.

Brilliant link. there was a time, long ago when a google search had me in the top ten results, with Sir David being the nine above me. Now it's all about football. You've no idea how relieved I was when Kieran scored that penalty. I thought my life would be blighted if he missed.


I see the book I plugged a while ago is mentioned. It's available free as a Kindle download via Amazon called Kindle unlimited -if that's complicated enough for you. Kindle Unlimited

Worth a look as they used to say in the Customs. Good luck if you want to download it - worth the effort I'd say.

Warning - Cancel that advice - the book is only free for two months then they start to charge you £7.99 per month. Now I remember why I try to have have nothing to do with Amazon. They tricked me into joining Prime once. Buy it on Abe Books instead.

Abebooks started up in the 1990s and I've often bought books through the site. In 2008 it was taken over by Amazon but didn't seem to change much, regardless of some prophecies of doom, and I still found the site and the sellers to be OK. In the last year it seems to have slipped and I've had several disappointments. The worst was a book that never arrived and the seller wouldn't reply to my polite queries. When that happens you have to give a fixed number of days then contact Abebooks direct. Eventually the order was cancelled but I didn't get an apology from anyone. (Just for the record, the seller was Greener Books, based in London.) I'm now noting which sellers are good and trying to get my books through them. I've bought 3 books through Abebooks in the last couple of weeks. One of them (bought from Goldstone Books) is an ex-library book with various rubber stamps and stickers in it but the seller didn't mention this in the details, which is naughty. It's a shame when you get a few letting down the service - most of the sellers are very good and run small bookshops around the country.

I've bought off them through Bookfinder Peter but take note of who the seller is. Some are brilliant, others not so good.

The 'undeclared' library book thing happened to me recently. I complained and quickly got a refund and was told to keep the book. I've never had a problem with Abe.

I didn't know Amazon owned them - they keep well in the background I'm pleased to say.

It's the latest near Earth object due to give us a close miss. Or has it just whizzed by us? I forget which.

Strictly speaking not an asteroid. It has a name.

Kev has identified it correctly. If you look at his link you'll see that it was neither a meteoroid or a comet but something quite alien. It may never visit us again.

I have trouble understanding the first paragraph of that link, even though it's an article from Scientific American:

If it arrives `perpendicularly inside Mercury’s orbit' and is `too fast for our star’s gravity to catch' how does it end up `on a slingshot-like loop around the sun' and then proceed `halfway to Jupiter' which would be at right angles to Mercury's orbit? Unless of course it's an alien space ship!
