Re: Mobile Phones
Ian. Just think what NASA could have done with that amount of memory and computing power in the early days....

Re: Mobile Phones
NASA is only a small part of the raw data collected in the US they are actually a big user of data collected by other government organisations. Weather, census returns, medication, movement people and goods all have enormous data bases of a size that can only be stored in the 'cloud' servers. Some of the chaos theory algorithms using these bases can now predict the probability of events that people could only guess at. A bit of excess flatulence from Barlick could trigger of the next stage of global warming.

Re: Mobile Phones
My new shiny multi size SIM came this morning for the mobile. Already registered to my mobile number, all I have to do is install the right one and go online and activate it. I reckon I need the Nano which is essentially just the contacts.

What caught my attention in that article based on a report from the Royal Society is this:
But if individuals keep their phones for four years instead of two, that contribution is halved.
Only 4 years!

Re: Mobile Phones
The frequency of phone swapping is based solely on the average contract length and is encouraged by both manufacturers and the mobile network providers. Aided as well by the advertising hype that tells everyone that they really do need the absolute latest tech. My two year old cast off from our Jack works fine. I will run it till it drops.

Similar to the shared computing project that SETI runs. That has been going for over 30 years now.

Re: Mobile Phones
I know several of you use 1p Mobile for your phone account. I've been using them for some years now and had accumulated a lot of credit because I only have the phone for emergencies and hardly use it. I pay £10 for 120 days. Now I've been pleased to see that on the last few top-ups they've let me use my credit instead of paying more, so I'm gradually running it down now.

Re: Mobile Phones
It shows how naive I am about these things, I'm not even sure how much my EE pay as you go card costs. Could it be £1 a week?

Re: Mobile Phones
Just for comparison, I pay £8 a month for 4GB of data, unlimited calls and texts.

Re: Mobile Phones
I'm on the £1 a week tariff. Don't you get reminder texts for topping up? I would check that you haven't dropped out of the tariff deal, if you have you will have automatically gone on to top rates.
Go into your account on EE and check.

Re: Mobile Phones
To much haste in this case is costing you brass. With any of the mobile phone packages if you drop out of the deal you are aromatically automatically switched onto the highest tariff. Without looking I think its about 25p a minute or thereabouts, it also impacts the rates for text messages and data use.

Is that switch powered by benzene, Ian?
Stanley, watch out you don't get your account closed.

Re: Mobile Phones
I can't remember the last time I made a call on my mobile outside of the house (it uses wifi for calls indoors as I've no signal in here), I'm not using very much data either as that's all wifi at the moment. Hopefully we'll all be allowed out to play again soon

Re: Mobile Phones
Same here Kev. Are my indoor calls on wi-fi? I have data roaming switched off and all my Whatsapp is on wi-fi.

Re: Mobile Phones
I do wish you hadn't said that. I've no idea. Now I'll worry about it. . . .
I just use the phone in the house and it works. Costs me £5.32 per month all in, and I'm happy

God knows, I'm in the same position as David but I shan't worry as long as a pound a week keeps them quiet.

I still marvel at the number of younger people go round with their eyes glued to a phone. Am I right in thinking that it's an age thing? In the article I am in the same school as the dog.....
