Mrs Brown in her shop on Crow Row in 1950. One of the last corner shops. In the 19th century the property was a 'tea merchants' run by one of the Slater family. Note the Berkel bacon slicer on the left with a piece of nice fatty shoulder bacon in it.

Lots of interest in this image of Church Street before 1900. St James' church is obvious but look carefully and you'll see market stalls in the street. These are mentioned frequently in the LTP. Brook Street was an early site for a market as was the space in Butts freed up after the Alhambra burned down in 1923.

Image

According to Ken Ridge, who lent me the photo, the lad in the oversize cloth cap in the left centre is Walt Boss, Jim Boss's son. The family name was actually Smith. Walt was Muriel's uncle.

The road's still dry macadam Mick so I'd say about 1910? Tarring and chipping didn't start until cars became more common around 1920 after the Great War.

This was posted by Angus last year. Here's what he said about it. " I must say that I had this image for quite some time before i found out that it was indeed a photo of a Barlick building. To my great surprise I realised that it is the Building on top of the road looking up Newtown to King street now the solicitors Walker Charlesworth"

Now called Craven House.

You're right Ian. It's always puzzled me that an asset like that building has never been utilised. As far as I know it has only served as a garage for at least 60 years. Very strange.....

The Majestic buildings 20 years ago. Doesn't the idea of a 'video shop' seem so old fashioned now, in itself that is a forgotten corner.

West Marton in about 2005. The entrance to the ginnel that led to the forge is in the centre and the estate cottages to the left of that. I haven't seen it lately but I think it will have changed!

You're right Ian, remarkably little change. But there used to be a big tree outside Yew Tree Farm.

This was 1972. (I was wrong on the date of the first one with the yellow shed outside the forge, that would be be about 2005. So I have edited it.)
