It isn't ambergris but I can see why you suggested it. A clue, it's neither animal nor vegetable matter - i.e. it's inorganic.

Kev's got it! It's a specimen of fulgurite in my mineral collection. When lightning strikes desert sand it fuses the sand into strange shapes which follow the path of the lightning in the ground. Wikipedia

Tizer, I claim a foul, You said 'petrified but not living' but isn't petrified by definition organic material turned to stone? Although I've been declared an expert on the subject many times I' refrained from mentioning waste products on OG.

I agree that the word petrified is most often used to mean turning a living thing into stone but it comes from the Greek word for stone and is literally `turned to stone' - in this case sand fused to become `stone'. If you want to claim a foul ask Kev if he used a reverse image search!

Go to this Google page LINK then click on the camera and either give a web address link for the Mystery Object image (right click on image and choose Copy Link) or choose Upload to find one on your computer. But beware, it's the work of the devil!

Or just right click on the picture and choose 'search for image'. Of course I'd never dream of cheating that way myself...

Wendy, in my Firefox if I right click on an image embedded in a post the menu doesn't offer `Search for Image'. I need to copy or save the image first, or use the web link I described above. I expect Stanley would find the same as me.
