Re: Earby Photos
Found this whilst rummaging through an old external hard drive (as yer do)....
Re: Earby Photos
...and another one found hiding on that drive.
One of the shops in the foreground on the right was Banhams bike shop, owned by Roland Banham whose image I have embedded.
Roland worked at Earby Light Engineering with my Dad in the Quality Dept.
Thinking of old shops in Earby reminded me of Lomax Chip Shop. They only sold Fish, Chips, Steak Puddings and Mushy Peas. None of yer fancy stuff.
And Beaty's the sweetshop/tobacconists whose window display never seemed to change over many years. Inside the shop there was a wooden chair where locals use to sit and chat with the shop owner. I used to have a picture of inside the shop. I'll have to have a rummage around for it.

Re: Earby Photos
I remember him and his wife because in the late 1950s he was active in the Chamber of Commerce. I remember his wife as well. There used to be a watchmaker on the opposite side of the road, what was his name?

Re: Earby Photos
You are correct, Stanley. Was it Emmots ?
I know that the shop on the opposite corner which is visible in the image was Harry Garlick's when I was a kid.

Re: Earby Photos
You're right Mick, it was Emmot. I bought a very good German alarm clock off him that served me well for many years.
I just opened the link Wendy and find I have repeated myself. I remember talking to Fred Inman about it now.....

Spring Mill
My childhood friend, David Penman (who later became a postman in Barlick), lived close to this on Wentcliffe Drive.
I remember us both walking down to the mill and watching them drag out all the looms.
The end of an era.

As Country Holidays have left Earby, Spring Mill is soon to be demolished completely and replaced with housing.

Re: Earby Photos
Was the building to the right part of the mill? I saw it on an old map the other week and wondered what it was.

Re: Earby Photos
I don't think so Wendy, wrong roof line and not near enough to the engine to get power. It's got me puzzled as well....

Re: Earby Photos
It was across the road on the corner of Chapel Street and looks like a large barn. I'll have to ask around!
