I can't get my head around where this bridge was precisely located. Has it completely gone and been covered over now? I'm trying to use the shop on the end of the road as a guide but still can't see it.
Would those kids on the bridge be stood somewhere near the middle of Barlick new Road now?

I don't have many old Salterforth images and the one I have posted below seems to be of no help at all.

They'd be stood on the Salterforth side of the road Mick. Looking at your pic, the bus has just come out of Salterforth Lane onto the new Road and has crossed where the old bridge was.

The culvert under the canal at Hanging Bridge Wharf at Salterforth which I believe was once a boatyard building the large canal boats that could carry 40 tons of setts.

Calf Hall Mill yard in 1986. Blin and Blin had moved out and Story's had taken over. They weren't to last long before Norman Fullalove (Carr's Printers) bought the mill and moved in there from Coates Mill. They demolished the chimney and refurbished the mill turning it into a modern factory before his sons got into financial trouble. It's now Hope Engineering.

Bancroft Yard on a wet November afternoon in 1979, the mill was running but to the casual observer is deserted.
This is one of those miserable cold little snaps that gets taken and then forgotten but sometimes they are worth looking at again. What I noticed straight away is that the culvert below the buildings at Bancrofts is blocked and the water is running into the dam across the field. This means I am going to have to go up there to clear the blockage in the cold and the wet. Deep joy! Add in the trees bare of leaves and the gloomy weather and you have a corner that's best forgotten over 40 years later......

Bancroft Yard in the last year the engine and mill were running, 1978. I can't remember how I did this pic, we didn't have the stack laddered just before closure. I think it must have been from the roof of the mill over the tape machines. It's an unusual view for me.....

Here's an interesting image from 1963 almost all of which is now a forgotten corner. .
Wellhouse mill and chimney are almost unchanged, the mill yard is used for a variety of purposes including, at the top end (west) garages and small businesses fronting on Skipton Road. To the north the gas works yard is still empty after demolition with the old gas showrooms remaining and the building in the SE corner which was used by Hemingway's Commercial garage. The Old Vicarage/Masonic Hall has quite a lot going on in the grounds, are they allotments?
A lot has changed in almost 60 years and well within living memory.....

This yard to the side of Craven House on Newtown has always intrigued me because in all the time I have known it it has never changed or seen any obvious use apart from car parking. I am told it was known as Singleton's Yard and was stables and a carriage house. It has been a forgotten corner for 60 years to my personal knowledge.

Monk House and the shop and barn in 1984. The shop was lady's outfitting and I don't know why but the name 'Harker' is nagging at the back of my mind.

Good morning. I think the Harker you remember was Barbra Harker who had a ladies clothes shop at the bottom of Frank Street with an adjacent wool shop which is now the wine bar. I cannot remember the lady’s name that had the shop at Monks Cottages but think is was called LA Mode it was more hosiery and lingerie.

You're right, Barbara was on Frank Street and the shop at Monk House was called La Mode. Thanks for putting me straight!

Angus posted this image and it took me a while to realise where it was. I mentioned this building on Newtown not long ago and then tripped over this image in the long grass yesterday. It confirms the stable yard and coach house theory. It was known as Singleton's Yard and it struck me that I have a Singleton on Commercial Street who was a coach proprietor. I wonder whether this was his original premises?

I've just deciphered what the sign on the shop says.... Dentist and Herbalist. I wonder if the commercial hotel was a sideline or the main business.



A large rope pulley being turned on the break lathe in the laundry at Wellhouse. This lathe was built by Johnny Pickles when he was asked to machine bases for AA guns in WW2. He took the job and built this lathe which was well used for big jobs like this. The lathe was considered too old fashioned to save when the buildings were demolished and is long gone.

Johnny Pickles and Jim Fort at Brown and Pickles in 1942 with a lathe for turning six inch shells which was built at Wellhouse. Long gone now of course but a remarkable reminder of the levels of expertise that we had in local engineering in those days. The castings were made in Barlick as well.

When you think about it, Station Road had some pretty impressive buildings down the South side but the standard dropped a bit on the opposite side. Not helped when I saved the little building which is now the taxi office. Here's John Northage doing it up in 1979. It cost me nothing in the end and I am glad I did it, I like that little building!

I'm confused somewhat here. Browsing another history site I came across another post regarding this building in 1979. Donald Jay says he bought it? Did you sell it on to him Stanley?

When the building was refurbished I lent it to Benjamin the optician free for as long as he wanted it. They were having their old building next door renovated. He was in there for almost a year I think. Then I sold it on through my solicitor Keith McCaan and can't remember anything about it. I was busy at the time and living in at Lancaster University. So I can't say anything about who bought it. It was certainly me that bought it for £300, spent £600 with John Northage and sold it for £900. The only thing I can remember is stipulating that the buyer had to pay all fees. My only interest was in saving it, and that's what happened.

A few days ago there was a post about the 1939 register and I said I know nothing about it. That makes this a forgotten corner because at some point I must have known and here is the register for 38 Norris Avenue in Stockport. The two entries redacted under No.38 are me and my sister Dorothy. There must have been a rule about people being alive or dead when the record was requested.

I think I found that for you Stanley. You are right, anyone alive when the register was first published on Findmypast is redacted. You can apply to have the record opened.

The NHS was fairly good at opening up the lines as people died without being asked as such. When browsing through local streets I found some redacted that I knew were mums friends that were still living. Doing it again a year or so later two had died and their records were on display.
