Can't imagine how I've managed without them all these years - nor can I visualise exactly what to do with them.

A church steeple / spire. St Andrew's in Burnley has a hexagon or octagon spire, can't remember which. The spiky thing could be the lightening conductor.

Correct Ken it's the inside of the spire of the church at Hamer Rochdale but I want the reason for the thingy you can see up there.... (Not a lightning conductor.)

Direct communication line to the cloud for passing down tablets of stone.

Part of the original falsework to create a plumb line attachment. Well that's what I would do.. :biggrin2:

It's the cross tree and spindle/vane rod that holds the upper section of the spire together in one big lump also the weather vane would have been connected to it.

Tom is right and yes Peter that's the one. The problem at Hamer was that the weight that hung from the central rod had fallen off into the bell hangings below. Luckily the finial stayed in place.

No great interest in this obviously. It's one of the oil pumps from the Bancroft engine that circulated the oil round the pedestal bearings when the engine was running.
I shall try for another one.....
