It is Peter, it's a bastard reed. So called because the dent spacing at each end was slightly greater than that in the rest of the reed. There was a reason for this and Ken gets the prize for remembering it was connected to the selvedge of the cloth.
Many people assumed that the reason for using bastard reeds was to cheat the customer by using less warp threads but this was not the case at Bancroft. If you are weaving a strong heavy cloth the selvedge can build up pressures that burst the edge of the piece and to stop that a bastard reed was used to reduce that pressure by putting less warp threads in the side of the piece.
Very well remembered Ken....

We've got mysterious white stuff falling from the sky. The US Intelligence Service believes it's caused by the Chinese or Russians. :extrawink:

Expanding on the cow horns thing, is it a weight that hangs on a calf's horn to make it grow downwards?

I've never seen them used but I am told by those who seem to know that they are lead weights that could be used to train the horns of show cattle to grow evenly. (I was given two of them)
So yes, you're right Kev. Well remembered!
Next one anyone?

Very close Kev and closely related but not a tyre lever. They are obsolete now but used to be essential on larger vehicles.
