........popping off to see a bit of art tonight. An exhibition at the Holiday Inn here in Hoylake entitled 'Mothers'. An artist, event organiser and writer called Harry Pye commissioned 100 artists to produce a work focussing on their mothers about 10 years ago. Hoylake has managed to secure 50 of these as a part of the town's 'Festival of Firsts', and there are works by Grayson Perry, The Singh Sisters and errrm, Vic Reeves.

The Festival of Firsts (which ran for the first time last year) was the brainchild of local resident John Gorman (lives over the back from me, often have a natter), he of The Scaffold and Tiswas. The big 'do' is next weekend - the whole promenade will be lined with original works by artists; all the shops have an artwork and/or poem displayed in the windows; there are poetry 'slams' and music (all genres) all day and well into the night in all the cafes, clubs and pubs; and in the village hall, community centre and churches original plays/discussions and other 'art' events occur. Things pop up anywhere - last year, you'd be strolling down the street to do a bit of shopping and some poet'd 'accost' you with a poem.

Almost all free, though some events have a nominal charge.

Nice to hear of a community initiative that seems to be working and doing good. Human beings need something more than expensive bread and circuses.
Not sure about today, I am feeling guilty about my engines......

After Bruff's post I had a look at some of Vic Reeves art work - different but no more avant garde than say Gerald Scarfe or Tracy Emin. He trained as an artist and some of his work is on sale for £thousands http://www.eyestorm.com/vic-reeves.html/.

As for me working in Blackburn this morning. Nolic

I think HM might enjoy a bit of muck picking if she had the time. I didn't do it anyway, I made soup and watched Wimbledon instead. Open Day at HAPPA today, so I shall be helping out on a stall.

Missing my granddaughter, it's granddaughter day but she is away on holiday. By now I should have read at least 10 stories on demand. Its very quiet, better go and put the tea in the slow cooker.

I did try to submit a post earlier today but just got the error screen, so I have mainly done the walk down to Kelbrook & back that I was mainly planning to do. It stayed dry until I got back but it is very wet underfoot. For the rest of the day I shall be wondering if we will go out tonight to celebrate 37 years of wedded bliss.
I might as well share a wedding picture with you....

Watching for postman, shopping and if there is time doing a bit on the engines.
The error message seems to have been a problem at the server not the site. Comrade Nolic got it as well. Seems to have gone away.......

Being relieved that I managed to get the grass cut yesterday....no chance for the next few days by the looks of the forecast. We had a nice meal out at the Black Lane Ends last night, but there was a mighty thunderstorm overhead and when we got home we had to search for poor Alfie who had squeezed himself into a corner under a desk.
Working (well, playing really) in the Archive Room down in Earby this morning....lovely.

Poor Alfie! Give him regards from Jack. I'm lucky with Jack he's not phased by thunder and is improving with fireworks on the telly as well. Who knows, by November, after all the fireworks there will be during the Olympics, he might be bomb-proof. I think you could be right about the rain.....

Putting the finishing touches to my renovation of Clarion House. Not the real one but a model made by one of the supporters of Clarion House 30 years ago. It sits on a small shelf to the right of the serving hatch and is designed as a collection receptacle for donations. We put any monies donated to "the house" into the renovation fund for the Clarion.
Its a scale wooden model of Clarion House with the verandah and the kitchen which even has representations of the Belling boilers we used to use for brewing up before our last major renovation. It depict the Clarion as it was 30 years ago with the little coal shed at the back. It was looking a bit dilapidated, especially the roof with the thousands of hands that have dropped their change from their purchases at the counter into the house. I decided to give it a refurb in time for our centenary celebrations next month. I have replaced the roof (which is what we are saving up for now for the real building), given the outside rendered walls a coat of "Snowcem" and replaced the signage on the building. I may have to do this again as I scaled the sign from a graphic on an inkjet printer and the colour has bled slightly from the PVA I used to glue the sign to the model. I am going to try a different adhesive. I will put a picture of the model in the ILP Clarion House thread on the site when I have finished.
