Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I was tempted to give in when black powder was mentioned but then decided it would be more interesting to wait and see if anyone could get closer to the specific use. I don't know if the bamboo type of container was used elsewhere but it makes sense that the miner would need to keep his fuses safe as well as `keep his powder dry'. I found it in this mining glossary when looking for something else... Dave Tuffley's Mining Glossary

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Interesting.
The word 'squib' reminded me that was the name ( I thnk) of one of the fireworks in the "Standard Fireworks" five bob box which was bought for November 5th.
Google to the rescue again reveals Standard Fireworks were a Yorkshire company and originally had some connections with the mining industry.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
In this part of Somerset the towns have carnivals on set dates every year. Long processions of flat bed lorries made up to represent all sorts of activities, nationalities etc. The locals love dressing up and having a great time! Later in the evening, as the long procession ends, other people walk behind carrying poles holding fireworks which have always been called squibs. Carnivals

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Some people called these old fireworks jumping jacks but there was another name for them. What was it?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
The Boll Weevil Monument in downtown Enterprise, Alabama, United States is a prominent landmark and tribute erected by the citizens of Enterprise in 1919 to show their appreciation to an insect, the boll weevil, for its profound influence on the area's agriculture and economy. Hailing the beetle as a "herald of prosperity," it stands as the world's first monument built to honor an agricultural pest.

I know from 'experience' that this is caused by a phosphorus deficiency in the soil...
