Because a feather was what was used to transfer the oil. Now please tell me who used it and where.....

a conical tinplate oil holder that hung on the loom frame with a feather in it for transferring the oil.

Exactly right Kev.....
Now for the next one......
Funny thing is I went for a furtle through my weaving pics and can't find a pic of a feather oiler on a loom. They were thin on the ground evidently at Bancroft. Most weavers had a Marvel dried milk tin with a hole punched through the lid for the feather....
