Complete change this morning. From lathe work to hand filing and some grinding on the wheel. The job was to clean up the castings, get rid of the worst flash and prepare them for machine finishing. After an hour and a quarter I have done most of them, just a bit more on the bed and the base to do but that can wait until tomorrow. Dirty work and reminded me of muscles I had forgotten about but essential work and very satisfying.

Morning

Er let me ask, Stanley. ………… Yes he says

Nice day yesterday, we walked to the local postoffice and back, about 2 miles. The paths were very muddy indeed. Bob spent most of the day in the workshop and I problem solved with my sewing. One problem solved, the other couldn’t be so was replaced by a different technique. I was trying to do a specific type of pocket but wanted it to look as good on the inside of the jacket as out. I just could not do it with the thick denim fabric. It will be a front patch pocket instead. We spent a pleasant evening at Claire's.

Today there will be no ironing as I cannot wash. I will change the bedding anyway but wait to wash it in the new washer tomorrow or Tuesday. Instead I shall tidy out the freezer to see what we have. I struggled to find anything to eat for one, when Bob was ill. He looks after the freezer her as he shops and does a lot of the cooking, I look after the freezer in France and do all the cooking there. I know exactly what is in the freezer, and after today I will know what is in this one. Its roast pork, with all the trimmings and red cabbage tonight.

Have a good day all

Thanks Sue..... These young lads and their newfangled Ideas! :biggrin2: It's not an engine to me if it hasn't got a cylinder and a piston but who am I to argue with the great and the good of the hobby.....
I recognise the pocket problem and yes, I have to do the same thing at times with my engines.... It's all part of the attraction actually.
I am up and it's dry and the sun is shining but a bit watery.... I suppose I really ought to have a walk. I shall see how I feel after a pot of tea.....

I've had my walk and a half hour sit on the form at the end of Albert Road. Lovely warm sun and sheltered from the wind. Very pleasant. Much better then the forecast suggested. I noticed how slow the leaves are to turn. Perhaps they need a good hard frost....

I shall have my hour in the shed working on the castings..... The forecast is dry so no reason why I shouldn't have a walk at midday.

More casting preparation. I finished the hand work on the bed and then installed it in the vise on the VM and milled the base flat. Then I turned it over and milled the heads of the beds for the pedestal bearings and the bed of the crosshead slide. Next I addressed the face of the target end of the bed which needed milling dead flat and square with the base and 1/4" thick. I fitted a larger cutter and did this. I took it out of the mill and checked it on the surface/assembly plate to make sure it was at 90 degrees to the base. Then I cleaned the chips off my mill. A good morning, all is well and I am ready to carry on with the castings tomorrow.

Morning

Stanley I think I learned in physics that an engine is something with moving parts that produces power, but then I was rubbish at physics. Perhaps that was my attraction to Bob, a physics under grad when we met…opposites attract and all that.

Yesterday was productive. Bob had a successful day at the park, with good takings for late October. I went and bought some winter flowering pansies from THE PLANT DUDE who used to be on Bacup market but is now based three days a week, including Sundays in Stubylee Park in Bacup. I then filled in a few gaps in some pots with the plants as the squirrels had been digging in the exposed soil. The rest of the afternoon I pottered in the garden and produced the final draft of my jacket pattern, with different pocket, ready for cutting out.

Today looks like another nice day, I may sort out my pots of spring bulbs stashed behind the greenhouse and plant up more as needed. I shall cover them with netting to deter the squirrels. Its zoom pilates at 10 and zoom yoga at 5.15. The new washer is to be delivered, fitted and old one taken away sometime during the afternoon.

Have a good day all

Morning Sue.... Glad you sorted the pattern. I was going to look for a pattern yesterday for a Nepalese Smoking hat, as I was thinking of getting my Susan to knit one for me but then I realised I wasn't going to live long enough and ordered it from Loud Elephant.... :biggrin2:
I've had my sleep and am looking at a dull day out there. I might find enough things to do inside..... It's dry and warm in here....
(I'll not argue about engines, I realise I am so old fashioned..... Engines to me reciprocate.... :biggrin2: )

Not sure about that definition. I don't think they understand what 'power' is.

Power is the rate of doing work, and work occurs when a force moves its point of application through a distance.

I don't think 'power' can be 'converted' in an engine, (or anywhere else ) but stand to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable than me.

Power can be converted. A reciprocating engine converts the power generated in a linear motion by the piston in the cylinder to rotary movement of a shaft by means of the crank. A turbine produces the power in a rotary motion and so cuts out the need for the crank.
I shall be in the shed as usual arguing with my castings....... Not even thinking about a walk as we are promised a dull wet day. I can take a hint!

I concentrated on the cylinder and in a variation of my usual method I used the inherent accuracy of the 90degree relationship between the two axis of the mill and milled the face of the valve seat and the two ends of the cylinder. It worked well but was actually no more accurate than my usual method. I spent almost 30 minutes on the faces on a new sheet of 80grit emery and ended with perfectly acceptable surfaces. A good hour with concrete progress. Now for breakfast, I've earned it.

Morning

I will not be continuing with this discussion as Anything to do with physics is far too deep for me🤣. It also brings back memories of being the only girl in a class of 20 plus for O level and a class of 5 for A level, teacher who couldn’t teach even if he was a very nice person and a peer group that thought I was odd because I did physics so tended to exclude me. Plus a failed career aim because I just could not understand it. Bob was my saviour. His teacher had written a slim dedicated revision book and I stuck to that, hence I did pass. In general physics does not have happy memories.

I had a very pleasant few hours in the garden yesterday, and a few more hours catching up with the washing after the new washer delivery. I cut out my jacket, which I shall start today. Its pilates and yoga in the studio this evening.

Have a good day all’

I don't know what your forecast looks like Sue but there is nothing very attractive about the Barlick forecast. I am just off to bed for second sleep.... It won't bother me not arguing about matters of physics, I am a hands on man myself not a theorist!Like you with your Jacket and I hope you have good progress. I have a very nice looking cylinder,,,,,

First I addressed the base and instead of removing the vise and bolting it directly to the bed I tried to take an easier way out by removing one of the jaws from the vise. I got the base cleaned up on both sides but it was harder and took longer. (Lesson noted!) Once the base was done I moved back to the bed. I need to cut out the horns where the crankshaft bearings sit 5/8" wide and 3/8" deep. By knocking off time I had this set up and was ready to start cutting. I shall leave that until tomorrow. I haven't made any mistakes but I'm not very pleased with myself for the time I wasted and the risks I took with the4 base. Not up to my usual standard.

Morning

Dry, clear and cold this morning. We are popping over to a engineers house ( he has died) to pick up some bits and pieces. This afternoon I shall carry on with my jacket which is progressing well. Zoom pilates at 5.15 pm, normally the last session of the week, but as there is no art tomorrow for half term , I may do the 10.00 a.m class then.

Our forecast says we shall have rain at first this morning..... I shall be in bed having second sleep after an hour in the shed working on my castings. It should dry up by midday so perhaps some light shopping in the Town Square to support the local economy..... I don't need to order any meat this week as I haven't cooked last week's yet!
I'm having to think a lot harder about my shopping and cooking now that I am into eating less. It's good for my brain as well as my wallet and waistline!

This morning was spent entirely on the bed casting, cutting out the pockets for the crankshaft bearing brasses, Cleaning the flanks of the castings inside the horns and outside. Cleaning the faces of the bosses for the holding down bolts and grinding out the aperture in the target face of the casting where the front cylinder lid and piston rod gland will fit. Now I can move onto the smaller castings but that is for tomorrow!

I shall be in the shed as usual for an hour but then will have to go to the Co-op for Early Doors shopping at 07:00. Eating less has upset my routine but as it happens I have enough needs this morning to justify going shopping as usual. After that I may be able to get an overcast but dry walk in at midday..... We shall see later.

Morning

What a busy day yesterday, very little sewing was done, we went to the garden centre after pilates and bought crocus bulbs to plant at the cemetery, and hyacinths in pots here. Christmas has taken over Gordon Riggs garden centre and it does not impress me so we called at Morrisons for cut flowers as Christmas trees have replaced them at Riggs. We went over to the cemetery mid afternoon, planted the bulbs and then back via our pharmacy to collect a new spacer for my asthma inhaler as mine had failed in the morning. We had another stop off to collect some special paint for the kitchen in France from Screw Fix so it was nearly 6 when we got home.

This morning is u3a art then lunch with Wendy and Keith. at the Italian at Hollingworth Lake. It promises to be a mildish dry day, much like yesterday . Have a good day
