Pennine Events has started to promote meeting Bradley Wiggins in Victory Park in August (quite heavily now)

about 1-3000+ people expected so book early! maybe many more if he has the yellow jersey #tdf and medals from the #olympics

The gathering storm over farm gate milk prices which is on the verge of destroying traditional milk production in England and with it doing tremendous damage to one of the main elements of the backbone of our country and rural society. Pleas do a site search for 'price of milk' and read the articles I wrote over ten years ago on this subject. Nothing has been done to protect the traditional dairy farmers and they are on the verge of becoming extinct.

It was a nice bright morning so I took Mrs Nikon out for a walk....



This caught my attention as an example of unintended consequences. Can you remember the two mature trees next to Croft House being taken out a couple of years ago? Since then about six trees have been taken out on the old sidings by high winds because they no longer have the old trees as a windbreak. I've seen the same thing in Scotland when a road has been driven through a wood, the trees on the western side of the group to the east of the new road always suffer.

How soon you get back into the groove when you go back to a project that has lain fallow for six months. Working in the shed has become almost automatic again and I only have to think twice before making a cut! I think it was Jules who used to have the strap line "Measure twice and cut once". Good advice.....
Mind you, I'm collecting small cuts on my hands and arms again.

The question posed by the Police Federation as to why redundant police officers looking for work hadn't been contacted re. the Olympic security 'problem'. They have a list of whom is available.

It's not hypocrisy, it's perspective. The G4S issue involves failure to provide the 10,000 security staff needed to prevent one or more potential security incidents that could kill or maim 100s of people. The company was being paid millions of pounds for this service. The case of the patient who died `for lack of water' is sad but he was violent and aggressive to nurses and they weren't being paid millions of pounds for the service they gave. I wouldn't like to have to nurse a man like that, especially on a nurse's salary.

I think that you complain about the symptoms rather than the issues

The private sector client is paid to deliver. When they don't deliver they don't get paid, and they have found themselves in the position of actually having to pay out for their mistakes. Tragedy though this is. Security can only ever be guaranteed by everyone being vigilant, and as the Labour MP on Today this morning described, all the contingencies were put into the contracts way back when they were originally signed under the last government.

The patient who died was only "violent" as you put it because he was trying to get something to drink, something that the staff should have been aware of because it is in his notes, and it is a well known and described history that people who are dehydrated become delirious. I know how hard it is to get a drink of water in a hospital when you're an in patient

What sanction has been pursued against the hospital? Or it doesn't matter because he's dead? We can all apologise on behalf of the state and move on? Do you think this hospital would have survived if it had been privately operated? So what is the difference?

When state departments don't deliver, they still get paid.

As to pay, I am sure that the nurses are paid far more that the G4S stewards, as is only correct.

I sincerely hope that you don't ever have to get any kind of treatment in similarly operating hospital.

I believe that your standards are wrong.

As an addendum, I understand it will cost £10,000/day for 10 policemen to be present at the Manchester hotel venue.

My attention was caught by these numbers in separate news stories this morning...
Nearly two-thirds of adults in the UK take too little exercise (two and half hours a week is recommended, so they are taking less than 22 minutes a day of exercise, such as walking).
People in the UK watch an average of 4 hours of TV a day.

Ramadan Food Sharing

Aim: To raise awareness of the Muslim community living in Barnoldswick, to enhance community cohesion and to build relationships between people of different faiths so we can peacefully co exist and reduce the fear of the unknown. I moved to Barnoldswick 3 years ago temporarily and from January have been living here permanently, being born in Bradford & studying in Manchester has developed me into a very pro advocate of community cohesion especially between different communities. It is this background and experience I wish to bring to Barnoldswick.

I intend this invent to be a social event, for people to come together, eat and be merry, I guess it provides a space for them to interact, and build friendships.

Audience:
People of all faiths and all ages, I would like to initially begin with 50 people, and then increase target audience depending on reception of event.

When:
Ramadan begins on the 20th/21ST July and lasts approximately 28 days, I would like to hold this event in the third week, which allows me to get all the publicity out etc, so 4th August 2012 at 8-9:30pm

Activity:
To begin the event an hour before fast breaks, so that we can have two main speakers, one from the Muslim community living in Barnoldswick giving a brief outline of Ramdan and the second from Barlick council if that is possible, just to express support and advocate integration in Barnoldswick. The rest of the time approx. an hour and a half, I want to dedicate to eating and socializing.

Where:
Barnoldswick, possibly the Rainhallcentre.

Food;
I am in talks with Aagrah in Skipton to see if they will donate food to us.

Support;
Hoping to get Barlick council on board

"The Oldie" magazine celebrates its 20th birthday. Editor Richard Ingrams was on the radio together with a a marketing man to discuss advertising in the magazine. The marketing chap said all his colleagues were very young and didn't appreciate the value of advertising in "The Oldie", even though many older people have more money to spend than younger ones. Ingrams said an advertising man told him that advertisers avoided older people because "they are too canny"!

I don't know, plenty of folk don't receive what they may or may not consider optimum treatment in private hospitals week in, week out. Some might be horribly maimed, or worse. I'm not aware of many of these shutting down when the odd mishap happens. Perhaps we should shut a hospital, public or private, when something untoward, no matter how isolated or singular, happens.

I blame it on humans. We have a tendency to be a bit unpredictable, in our behaviour (on say, the part of those wanting the service) and our judgements (on the say the part of those delivering it). Mistakes happen. It's be better if we were super-rational, predictable widgets. Nothing would go wrong then...

Bradley Wiggins and his side burns powering through to win the Tour barring catastrophe. I've done my share of long-distance cycling and have a tiny idea of the stress, both physical and mental that he has conquered. Wonderful achievement.
The Aurora shootings. How come he could buy several guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition legally. Could this have something to do with the tragedy?
How satisfying it is to see the engines progressing. When you are doing dozens of small precise tasks to make a casting into a thing of beauty you sometimes wonder if it's worth the trouble and whether anyone will realise the hours and hours of work you put in. But when you reach the fitting stage of one part of the engine as I did yesterday it all comes together. We need these small achievements for a well-balanced life! Who could be bored when you have chances for joy like this?
