Bob thinks he has found it, in one socket on the circuit the metal box had cut into the cable, and the wires could have been touching it. So now we have to wait and see.

I hope that was the cause Sue, it's miserable when you have a vague intermittent fault. Easy to deal with something burning out and smoking but little things like that are a pain.
Sorry to hear about your epic cupboard clean. Perhaps the trick is to not bother!

All done, looks a lot better now. Used up the leftover laminate flooring, from when I did my kitchen, in youngest offspring's downstairs toilet. That's enough for today, back home drinking a brew now.

I shall be in the shed as usual at 06:00 working on the piece of scrap that will become a perfectly formed connecting rod. Susan is coming after second sleep and we will go veggie shopping for Xmas.....

Still reducing my piece of hard scrap to a connecting rod. I started the day by reducing the body of the stock to the minor diameter of 7/16" and when I got there, cutting the rod off from the body of the stock using a hacksaw. You may wonder why I went down the route of manual sawing when I could have parted it off. This is such hard material that there was every chance of the parting operation failing and I wanted to avoid that so I put a new all hard 18tpi blade in my hacksaw frame and settled into twenty minutes of hard work. It was the right decision and you'll see that I finished up with a clean cut. I cleaned the chips off Mrs Harrison and swept the floor. I ended with a nice little piece of stock that I can refine until it is a con-rod and a straight edge in a clean shed. That makes it a good morning!

Morning

All is calm in the Hayter household at last. Bob is on the road to recovery, we think the electric fault has been found🤞, the kitchen is back in order although the floorboards are not quite dry. Lots of small household repairs have been done and I am just doing a covid test before I tootle off to the hairdressers. Looks like it is negative.

Nothing else planned for today, it was to have been our u3 a wine social

Have a good day all

I think a reminder of this from earlier this year, may be relevant to this thread - Night Nurse has been withdrawn from sale.

That thought struck me as well but I decided Sue and Bob probably have enough sense to make their own decisions.
I shall be in the shed for an hour and I am not sure yet about the rest of the day. All I am sure of is that I have to order my meat from Stuart....

Morning

Ironically Bob has used both of the products, named in the article , over the last few days. They both eased his cough and gave him a good nights sleep. The concern is I think about allergies which we would know about having used them before with no ill effects. There is a warning on Nightnurse not to use it more than three nights. Its not needed now, as apart from a bit of nasal congestion Bob is better. I on the other hand have a drippy nose and a headache but no cough and do not feel particularly ill. It flared up late yesterday afternoon. We have never had a common cold that has cleared so quickly. In Bobs case Saturday afternoon to Wednesday. I will not be wasting a valable test on my symptoms…I paid £9.95 for a box of 5 yesterday. We will save them to test on Christmas Eve so we can decide about going to Coventry for Christmas. At that price I understand why people aren’t testing if you are struggling to put food on the table.

It will be indoor activities again with both the weather and covid keeping us inside. The latter reason is by choice. There are no official restrictions any more. I resorted to working on my WIDDUP book yesterday and may well continue today. I think Bob is well enough to return to his workshop.

"I think Bob is well enough to return to his workshop. "
That's good to hear! Stay indoors and keep warm! That's what I shall be doing. We are being battered by the wind, if it's this bad down here in the shelter of the town God knows what it's like up at Burnt Hill for Wendy and Col. The gusts on the North side of the house are strong enough to make it sound as though someone is knocking on the door.

Image

More work on the connecting rod. It's terribly hard and this explains why I have ended up with a slightly more chunky rod than usual, but I can live with that. I'm not going to take the risk of going for more refinement and finishing up with a buggered part! I know my limits and have stopped. I can handle the extra thickness in the fitting process.... Now for breakfast and back to bed!

It wasn't a pleasant night and I didn't get much sleep with all the noise. Col seemed to sleep through most of it! It's the extractor fans in our en suite bathroom and in the kitchen that make most noise!

The front windows are still whistling, I don't think further adjustment will make any difference. I have tried pushing them further onto the rubber seals from inside and it makes no difference. I will go outside and check the mastic seals around the frames later this week.

Concerns were raised when people undergoing surgery involving the use of muscle relaxants were affected - so previous use with no effects is not really relevant.

I only took it once - a few years ago - it stopped me coughing OK, but I was so impressed by the experience that I labelled the bottle.

Just read the article again and the anaesthetic concern is with the pholcodeine. Night nurse does not contain pholcodeine , neither does the cough medicine Covonia .or at least our bottles don’t

……..Evidence was found that pholcodine, which is found in cough syrups, could in rare cases cause an allergic reaction if the user undergoes surgery and needs a general anaesthetic which involves the use of a muscle relaxant.

The review concluded that the benefits of pholcodine-containing cough and cold medicines 'do not outweigh the increased risk of the very rare event of anaphylaxis'……

Well spotted.

The headline implies that Nightnurse has been banned from sale, but the detailed list of withdrawn products does not include it.
Yet the capsules have been. Are they a different formulation? I was surprised to find a long time ago, that a manufacturer can change the formulation of a remedy without announcing it, and selling it under exactly the same packaging.

I read labels. Cette sauce de haute qualite. . . . :laugh5:

My opinion is influenced by having once known some one who was addicted to it. The limit of three nightly doses is well made I'd say.

Doesn't affect me at all though - I'll never use it again.

A bit of background reading in night nurse reveals
Dextromethorphan is the active ingredients that suppresses the coughing centre of the brain. Iexcessive amounts can cause convulsions. So I would say stick to the three doses only. There is a reason for these statements

The cough medicine is apparently useless. Flavourings glucose peppermint oil liquorice

The taets we take are only paracetamol and a decongestant but they aren't night nurse.

It looks like the villain of the piece was Day Nurse (and Day and Night Nurse capsules).
I misread that as Day Nurse and Night Nurse.

Apparently what is in night nurse liquid is the same as Benylin. The recommended alternative to pholcodeine apparently

Bob likes his cough medicines and strepsils, far too sweet for me.
