Kev, my public notice story to go with sign out of use is that I once heard that the Royal Label Factory once produced a cast iron sign that read 'It is an offence to throw stones at this sign.'

I can confirm that such a sign exists. I've seen at least one and I think it must have been in a museum. May not have been exact same words. I expect it was originally fixed above or below the main sign. Could have been on the railways.
