What Bradley Wiggins has done carries a lot of weight. An headline last week commented on the sudden rise in the number of people cycling. Bradley looks like an ordinary chap, unlike the manicured and overpaid posers that dominate certain other sports. Cycling is also a good way to learn proper roadmanship and that's where I learned, as soon as I felt confident enough, aged 9, it became my escape from being "taken to the match" on Saturdays, this grew in my teens and early 20s into long distance rides on Sundays and time trials on Saturdays, Holidays were spent in the saddle, happy days. But I know a "Barlick Lad" who took part in the Tour De France several times, Cousin Derek Pickles, born on Clarence St in the 1920s. the Family moved to Blackpool before WW2, Derek spent his War in Burma and it was after his return that he bought "The Bike" This was a Claud Butler. By the 1950s he had married but his bike remained with his parents and became my chosen steed for exploring Blackpool whilst on holiday there, it still bore the sticky labels from the tours, He never matched Bradley's achievements but was always proud of his participation. For the cyclists amongst you, these are my bikes in order of ownwership. Aged six my Sisters old bike, a Sun, then a Dawes, next came a BSA Gold Wings before going upmarket to a Higgins Ultralight, then a Hetchins followed by a Hills Special. The last one, inherited from my Uncle was a Parkes Special.

Oh dear Thomo, just reading the word Hetchins has reminded me of Uncle Harry (my mum's sister's husband). Always a cycling enthusiast (and er... a bit of a rogue) he bought a load of Hetchins frames and parts at an auction many years ago. He would have been into his late seventies or even eighties by then, and he built up bikes from these parts to sell them through Exchange & Mart. They went all over the world. He always said that he never claimed that they were originals, but once they left his hands he had no control over what happened to them next! I see his name is mentioned on the Classic Hetchins website....

I was told yesterday that the Lancashire telegraph is "investigating" some of the LCC approved care homes after some rather poor CQC inspections

5 in East Lancs

Can I just say, that if half of what I was told is true then it is truely disgusting that it is happening and I do hope that prosecutions follow

They could say they thought is was still the 1948 London Games

Flag of South Korea

Taegeukgi / Taegukgi [flag] has three parts: a white background; a red and blue taegeuk in the center; and four black trigrams, one in each corner of the flag. These trigrams are carried over from the eight trigrams (Pal Gwae), which are of Chinese origin.

The white background symbolizes "cleanliness of the people". The Taegeuk represents the origin of all things in the universe; holding the two principles of yin and yang in perfect balance; the former being the negative aspect rendered in blue, and the latter as the positive aspect rendered in red. Together, they represent a continuous movement within infinity, the two merging as one.

Traditionally, the four trigrams are related to the Five Phases of fire, water, earth, wood, and metal

(said you cannot escape the metal and woodwork threads anywhere in this place).

Doing a boot sale at the weekend I had a CD left over from a pile I otherwise sold off , asked some passing people if they knew what it was as I only had the disc- Answer - "My wife is from Japan , I'm from South Korea and your CD is Chinese".

Flying the wrong flag in a mix up over the North and South Korean they haven't asked Bury Council for advise they put the union jack on the flag pole upside down. Then again they are always in distress or is it us that are in distress. Eileen

A power cut at 5.45pm yesterday. An interesting few minutes trying to give our address to a voice recognition system at YEDL then a few more minutes trying to convince a real person that we exist before being told that they expected the power to be back on by nine. It turned out that there was a pole down in a field at Harden Old House just down the clough. The field was being mowed, so I assume the tractor or equipment had hit the pole...it was broken off a few feet above the ground. It was after ten before a team arrived to repair it, and the power came back on at 12.30.
Luckily Col has arranged things so the TV and associated boxes can be switched over onto battery power so we were able to watch the opening ceremony, and record it for the neighbours!

How beautiful our Queen looked at the Olympic's shown on the news, how was the opening ceremony?

I Knew Danny Boyles father Frank through my brother who was steward at the local Catholic Club were Danny took his Oscars. Never thought he would do something like the opening ceremony for the Olympics after all the weird films he's produced Eileen

Something that will catch my attention tomorrow will be up to 30 Harley Davidson motorcycles dropping into Barlick for a break at Coffee Corner. They should be there shortly after 11am. A good photo opportunity.

Thanks for the picture Stanley, do you know where it was taken?
Eileen the Queen looked magnificent but bored stiff, or just exhausted perhaps. There was a moment when the cameras cut to her glumly picking at the skin beside her fingernail! There was also a moment when the editors chose to show a German official cheering the team into the stadium with almost a Nazi salute, he was just swinging his arm around a bit..

Wendy, it's Abel Taylor mowing at Green Bank Farm on Gisburn Old Track in 1956. The horse was a gelding called Dick and the mower was a Bamford 'Two Horse' mower with a petrol engine driving the cutter bar.
