This makes you think. Grimsby House clearance auction

After watching it I'll be going to the tip. My little treasures seem to be worth very little.

A box of records, including one signed by Val Doonican has just sold for £3. My Sony mini Hifi has made £4.

PS I've redone the link - It works OK for me. I like auctions - even ones such as this.

The video didn't play for me David..... But don't get too depressed at the low 'value' according to the auctions. Our treasured possessions depend on their value to us in other terms than money. William Morris said Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. . and such artefacts don't always have a monetary value that matches their value to you. Books are a good example, if you sell them you almost always lose on the deal except for some very exceptional items. But you never think about that when you are buying them. You place your own value on them and that has nothing to do with money.
So cheer up! Put a record on the hi-fi and immerse yourself in the sound......

I stayed up till silly o'clock last night / this morning, watching the final round in the chess world chanpionship candidates knockout tournament. I went to bed thinking that Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi had shaken hands with American Fabio Caruana, indicating resignation. That meant a tie for first place and play offs. I was a bit puzzled as I could not see why he had resigned. There did not seem to be an imminent win visible (at least to me). I was watching a feed with no audio commentary, but the printed comments seemed to have the same idea.

I now find that the result was in fact Ian was offering a draw, which means there is a sole winner, and the winning challenger will be a seventeen year old (youngest ever challenger) Indian gentleman called Gukesh Dommaraju.

Collpase of stout party (again)

I envy you you#re knowledge of chess David. They once tried to teach me the art at grammar school but failed miserably. It had no attraction for me whatsoever. I am very happy for you!

After having a hiccup the site is now behaving again. I've admired Andrew Neil for a long time - since his late night show with Portillo on BBC 2. This clip too good to let pass. It also supports my latest hobby horse that there are too many people supervising work / activities, and too few actually doing stuff. Note the arogant sense of entitlement of the questioner, that she has the right / duty to get involved with the press.

Uncle JIm has just been down for a visit. He's from Goosnargh. I showed him round this site of course, and he's well impressed with Stanleys workshop. I mentioned we had a member who had recently moved to Longridge. "Does she want to join t'bowls club"? was the quick response. (He's the Secretary). "Which one" says I - "Whitechapel" says he. I've just looked on Street View and it looks a nice place, with what looks a good pub, that I have often heard him mention. The Cross Keys

Tell Uncle Jim I am impressed by his boots.... :biggrin2:
Although, on giving the matter some thought, why should the fact he has leather footwear have any bearing on his personal qualities. I fear I am very shallow and a simple minded bugger. These things carry so much weight with me.
As for the Cross Keys.... Can anyone tell me why the chips served with the steak and chips are in a separate dish?

because it's supposed to be posh so they can charge a bit more I bet.

I have a similar question, what has a pineapple ring to do with gammon, egg, tomato and chips, that's just wrong. :extrawink:

And in Indian cuisine, why is there an omelette on top of a Biryani although I think that may be a regional thing depending where the chef comes from.

It's as entitled to be there as the other fruit - the tomato - I'd say. It's not compulsory.

There is a case for saying that the acidic pineapple is useful in digesting the fat in the meal. Same function as vinegar on chips.....

JIm recommended the Clitheroe Auction Mart which he tells me now has an online element, is enormous, and a source of great bargains - which sometimes you never knew you actually needed.

He does wood turning and showed me a beautiful piece of Beech about the size of a house brick, which he will use to make an extension to the base of the bowls club annual trophy. He found it in a bag of off cuts being sold for firewood, and managed to blag it without buying the whole bag. He is very personable.

As I suspected. . .and it's from The Guardian.

The idea that night owls who don’t go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early.

Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants’ sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (which determines what time of day we feel most alert and productive) affected brain performance.

They found that those who stay up late and those classed as “intermediate” had “superior cognitive function”, while morning larks had the lowest scores.

Eurosport's ex BBC commentator Bob Ballard has been removed from the broadcaster's coverage of the Olympic Games after he made a sexist remark regarding Australia's female swimmers. After securing gold in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay, - they made their way out of the Paris Aquatic Centre. At this point, experienced commentator Ballard said: 'Well, the women just finishing up. You know what women are like… hanging around, doing their make-up'.

Good grief. :surprised:

I'm watching the swimming and my immediate thought was that the ladies look very muscular, and not very feminine. Better not say it though - I might get banned from watching.

The BBC help here - but of course there can be no excuse for such a serious breach of broadcasting standards and he must be fired immediately.

"Mr Ballard has been a stalwart of global sports coverage since the 1980s, reporting on many Olympic games and World Championships."

I doubt if he will be fired but he will now be quite clear in his mind that things have changed. Mind you, people like Trump are a good example of how sexists can succeed in this world as long as they are 'important' enough. Perhaps Mr Ballard thought he was important.... :biggrin2:

No doubt in the BBC report -

"A veteran sports commentator has been sacked from his Olympics role after making a sexist remark about Australian female swimmers following their gold medal win".
