Isn't mid November a bit early for serious snow?
From memory, we rarely saw snow before my birthday in early January when I was little.
Of course that was well before climate change had been invented, and we just knew it all as "weather".

Yes David, you're right. We've hardly got into winter yet. In 1947, the worst winter on record, it started snowing in late January but it wasn't until the 4th of March that the real blizzard hit us.
Yesterday afternoon we had sunny spells and this was followed by a clear cold night. This morning we have a light breeze and it is clear and cold. The glass is steady on 1003mb and the forecast is for a dry, bright overcast day with sunny intervals. The constant westerly winds will be moderate and we can expect a high of 2C with a low of -3C tonight. But the w3ind chill is never less than -3c and this afternoon could reach -7C so at no time today will it feel to be above freezing. Snow is forecast for late tonight. Tomorrow will be a sunny cold day but Saturday the temperature shoots up and we have heavy rain forecast. After that we are back in warmer weather.

-7C here according to the forecast. I have just been out for a walk and some milk! I thought it would perhaps be better underfoot this morning than tomorrow.... It's done now and I have my milk and garlic!

Update to the post I made yesterday about snow on the hills here in south-west Somerset:
It's not just the hills: it was snowing here in town when we got up and is still falling. We can't see the hills of Exmoor at the moment, the falling snow is too dense. Now here's the weird bit - our forecast is for 3C today, 7C tomorrow, then 15C for Saturday and Sunday and 14C overnight! After that its 11C/12C through into December (but the forecast will have changed dramatically by then, going by previous experience.

It's going to warm up here as well Peter after another cold day tomorrow. Today's forecast gives snow late tonight and early tomorrow. That's what motivated me to go to the Co-op this morning a, though very cold, it'd dry underfoot.
PS I looked in the shed and it's colder in there now than it was this morning....

We’ve had sleety snow this afternoon. Now the sky is very heavy and I would think we will have more snow overnight.

It was the same here Gloria and at 16:00 big flakes of snow were falling but it hasn't amounted to anything. See THIS report of storm Bert which will hit us later today.
Yesterday afternoon was overcast and at 16:00 snow was falling but didn't persist. We had a clear cold night and this morning it's clear and cold with a light breeze. The glass has fallen to 994mb and the forecast is for a clear bright sunny day until early afternoon when it clouds over and sleet is forecast. There is a yellow warning for snow and ice but I think that refers to any precipitation freezing as it hits the cold ground. The constant westerly winds will be moderate all day and we can expect a high of 4C and a low of -1C tonight. The wind chill will be -4 for almost the whole of the day, Tomorrow is going to be wet and windy but much warmer as is Sunday as well. After that the weather settles down to a more normal pattern.

I've been looking at the weather.... We have rain and snow forecast from now until dark and at the moment we have a slow thaw which is making the ice underfoot even more slippy. Tomorrow is going to be a rough day starting with possible rain and snow combined with a wind chill of -6C which will take us to well below freezing. My advice is stay in bed!

Had all good intentions of going to the shops after work, the weather put paid to that. I couldn't get the doors open on the car, it's frozen solid. :biggrin2:
I doubt I'd get it off the drive either, slightly uphill and very icy. I had enough trouble standing up. Back indoors with the kettle on, it'll be tropical here this time tomorrow

Re: TODAY'S PENNINE WEATHER

I think you're right Kev! The effective temperature taking wind chill into account is going to be below freezing until late this morning.
Yesterday afternoon reverted to overcast later. It cleared for a while into the night but then the overcast took over again. This morning we have a light wind overcast sky and a slight frost. It's dry at the moment but we are promised rain and snow starting any time from here on in. The glass has risen and is on 1006mb. We have a yellow warning of wind and ice until at least 09:00. The southerly winds will be strong gusting to almost 50mph and we can expect a high of 13C later and a low of 10C tonight. But for much of the day, until noon, the wind chill of up to -6C will ensure that the perceived temperature is below freezing. At first we could have snow or sleet but after that we are promised heavy rain until late afternoon slackening to lighter rain into the evening. The rain and higher temperatures will see off the ice but not until this afternoon. This morning could be a bugger. Stay indoors unless you absolutely have to go out. The rain will persist until tomorrow morning but the wind will persist all day. From Monday the weather settles down a bit, still windy but dry and more seasonal temperatures.

It's started raining and it's below freezing. I think you are intelligent enough to work out what is the most likely outcome.
If you have to go out please be careful....
PS the glass is down on 1001mb, falling very quickly. That tells its own story....

We have rain and a slight breeze, it looks like one of those days where it never comes proper light. Don’t know about the temperature, havent stuck my head out yet. I have now, and it’s bitterly cold.

I've had my two hours of second sleep and I see that while I have been away, we have had snow down here and the glass has plummeted even further to 991mb.
And yes Gloria, it's not got properly light here yet....

Yesterday afternoon we had solid rain, at 20:00 there was a lull in the rain, I noticed the glass had fallen to 984mb during the day. It has been a warm night and this morning we have wind and rain and the glass has fallen further to 978mb. The forecast is rain until 09:00 and then dry with a bright overcast for the rest of the day. The constant SW wind is strong gusting to almost 50mph and we can expect a high of 12C with a low of 5C tonight. The wind chill will be -4C for most of the day. The outlook for next week is for it to be cooler but dry and bright until later in the week.

Yesterday brought us a very welcome cool change, after 2 days of 36C. We’ve even had a bit of rain.
Much nicer for sleeping and being outside.
Daughter is returning to Birmingham, from The Cotswolds, today… hope she doesn’t get blown away 💨. 🤞

I've been listening to the shipping forecast and spare a thought for the people in the north of Scotland who are experiencing Gales force 11 and stronger. The low is expected to fall to the 950s. Storm Bert isn't finished with the Isles yet.

I thought we were going to get washed away yesterday afternoon there was so much water coming down the hill. At least 5 inches of snow melted within a couple of hours plus torrential rain. Scary.
