Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I think you will Tom but I thought there might be people who didn't. Worth trying anyway!

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
The Google AI Overview
A ring spinning machine, also known as a ring spinning frame, is a device that spins fibers into yarn using a ring and traveler take-up. It's the most popular spinning machine in the world.
Here's how a ring spinning machine works:
1. Feed the yarn
A sliver of yarn is fed onto a bobbin on a rotating spindle.
2. Apply torsion
The yarn is fed through drafting rollers to apply torsion for the first time.
3. Twist the yarn
The yarn is guided by a ring traveler that slides around the bobbin on the ring. The yarn is then twisted into a thin ribbon by the drafting system.
4. Wind the yarn
The yarn is wound onto a bobbin, called the ring cop, as the ring moves up and down.
Ring spinning is a continuous process, unlike mule spinning, which is intermittent. The ring spinning frame developed from the throstle frame, which was descended from Arkwright's water frame.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Yes, you both got it right. Worth a try!
Kev, the AI version got it wrong, in step 2 substitute tension for torsion. There is no twisting in the drafting rollers.
We need another object....

Who used this trade mark?

There were no offers. It's the trade mark of Hopkinson's of Huddersfield, the maker of the best valves and other boiler fittings in the world.

Think of a very soft metal used in engineering at one time but obsolete today.....

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
No Gloria but one of those could be used for the dame job. The thing about the curved teeth was that they were specifically designed for use on one soft metal, still available but obsolete in modern practice.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
It would work on them Tom. It's so esoteric I am going to come clean, it's not fair on you all. It was designed specially for shaving Babbitt metal off flat surfaces.... (LINK) (I've had one for years and thought it was simply a rasp but I found out two days ago what it was actually made for.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Indeed but it still has to be done when refurbishing old machines. It was Keith Rucker that found this file when pouring new bearings in a cane mill. He had never heard of a Babbitt file either but luckily his had 'Babbit file' stamped on the shank!
Now, tell me what this is.
