Outside the back door we have -4 and it’s north facing, we are a lot better than some.

-5C here Gloria but it's not going to get back to -12C tonight, it will be 3C warmer and better still after that. There is hope for us yet! :biggrin2:

Anyone with too much sunshine might like a look at this. Nice on a Christmas card - but probably not a good idea to walk up Pendle Hill yesterday. I think Charlie was in a bit more danger than he realised. Nice views though.

You wouldn't have caught me doing it David! Possibly all right for someone young and fit with the proper gear but otherwise far too treacherous underfoot. The Mountain Rescue wouldn't thank you if you needed their help!
Yesterday was wall to wall sun and we had clear skies all night. This morning we have a brilliant moon, sky still clear and 'only' -10C. The glass rose slowly all day yesterday and this morning is on 1022mb. The forecast is again for a clear bright day. The constant SE breeze is light and allows us a high of 2C with a low tonight of -3C, a big improvement! The outlook is for the warming to continue and next week we shall have double figures during the day!

We didn't see him directly but from his shadow in some of the shots he didn't seem to have any kit with him apart from his mobile. I didn't see the shape of a rucksack on the guy so he must have been bereft and daft at the same time.

No problem walking on the fells at this time of year if you have all the kit, know how to use it and know your limitations. I have done Penyghent on New Years Day when there was only myself and our Dan on the mountain and walked from Stalling Busk and over the fell via Cam High Road and down into Gayle in 2ft of snow on the way up and down between Christmas and the New Year. Couldn't do it now, not because I don't have the skills or the kit but because my right side deficit says no. I can do the hills but it takes a lot longer than it used to which is OK in decent weather. I would still take all the kit though. :extrawink:

A paraglider flew over us on our walk into Colne yesterday. I commented at the time that they must be mad, it was below freezing on the ground.

I wonder if it was the same one...

It has warmed up a bit today

Indeed Kev, today could be the last of the bitter cold days..... I want to see it safe underfoot!
Yesterday we saw the beginning of a change, it wasn't perfectly clear in the afternoon and became overcast overnight. We were ten degrees warmer than last night! The glass rose slowly all day yesterday and this morning is steady on 1032mb. The forecast is for broken cloud as overcast all day. We can expect sunny intervals during daylight. The constant southerly breeze is light and might give us -3C wind chill at times. We can expect a high of 3C during the day and a low tonight of 1C, yes, that's right, not even freezing! The outlook is for three days heavy overcast with perhaps some rain but the bonus is the temperature is heading up and will reach double figures with sunshine by Thursday. We appear to have survived this cold snap.

Quite Hot here for the last few days, still more to come. Best to do things early, then stay in the AirCon.
It’s very Still here today, and +7C above our average daily high.
.
Too early yet to be hoping for cooler temperatures. 😞

The latest good sign.... the frost is coming out of the walls. They are condensing the moisture in the atmosphere and freezing it and so are changing to white. A sure sign of the air being well above freezing..... Roll on! :good:

A trip out on the bus today, going to the Barlick Raj for tea. I noticed the flat rate bus fare had gone up to £3, not sure if it's the same on a Sunday.

Same problem here Gloria. It's a slow thaw but still ice in patches underfoot. I refuse to become a statistic!
Yesterday afternoon brightened up and the slow thaw continued. By 19:00 we had broken cloud overcast and this morning it is the same, not thick enough to hide the full moon, you can still see it. The wind chill from the light breeze keeps us below freezing point but this will change later. The glass is tending to fall but is still on 1032mb. The forecast is for an overcast day and we can expect rain from mid-afternoon onwards. The constant SW wind is moderate and gusts to 30mph gibing us a high of 6C and a low of 6C tonight with a -5C wind chill for much of the time. Tomorrow will be a wet overcast day like today with 9C and the rest of the week will be brighter, dry and sunny but with a lower temperature of about 7C. With luck we should see the majority of the ice underfoot fade away today and tomorrow.

It's been 5C here for most of the day, the wind is cold though. The sunset crept in under the clouds this evening.

Yesterday afternoon the slow thaw continued and shortly after 16:00 it started raining. We had light rain at 19:30 when I went to bed and it continued all night. There was no frost during the night and this morning it's still raining, very light and fine but it's helping to wash the last of the snow and ice away. The glass is down on 1028mb and the forecast is for the rain to persist until 09:00 and for an overcast or even foggy day but most importantly frost free. The constant WSW wind will be moderate, easing as the day goes on. We can expect a high of 9C and a low of 7C tonight with a wind chill of -3C this morning but this will ease as the wind falls. The outlook is for brighter, drier weather with similar temperatures and perhaps light night frost. Winter has retreated for a while.....

Yesterday afternoon the dunkelflaute deteriorated with continuous mizzle but it was getting rid of the ice! This morning it was still mizzling and we had a thin haze partially obscuring the moon. The glass is up slightly on 1030mb and the forecast is for it to clear by mid morning and we shall have a dry bright and sunny day. The WSW winds will be light and we can expect a high of 9C with a low of -3C tonight under the clear sky. There could be a wind chill of -2C at any point. The outlook is for similar weather, drier and no surprises......

Much the same here Stanley, mizzling. Yesterday was the same, we went to Clitheroe and it mizzled there and back.

Yesterday afternoon eventually became sunny and I noticed that my CH turned off! We had a clear frosty night with a brilliant moon and first thing this morning it was calm, clear and a light frost. The glass is steady on 1029mb and the forecast is for a clear dry day with full sun. The constant SSW wind is light and we can expect a high of 7C and a low tonight of -1C with a -3C wind chill for much of the day. The outlook is for similar dry weather but overcast. Not bad weather for January!
(Margaret says the forecast in Perth is for 40C..... I think I'd rather have 7C thank you.)
