I thought they were tachographs at first but they are not.

I've got to give it to you Margaret. They are the charts for a Servis Recorder which was the first 'spy in the cab', the precursor of the modern tachograph.....

You're right Tom and that was a useful function of the carpets but there was another more important function. Clue, if not alleviated it could actually damage the engine in the long run.....
