You've got it Tom! Well done? The carpets tended to trap the dust that floated about and it could be harvested by sweeping, shaking or a vacuum cleaner. Every bit caught in the carpet was one piece less to float about and get into bearing surfaces.

Sorry, neither of those. Nothing to do with threads. Clue, they are very finely made lathe tools made of high carbon steel and were never a commercial item.

Nobody seems to be interested. One last big clue.... these were cutters used on an ornamental turning lathe for working with one specific material. Can you guess what it was?
