Today Bob's cousin has left so we are pottering. I am sorting out the rhubarb patch which doesn't look too healthy in this heat ( out side the house reached over 45 Cyesterday). Bob is digging out his miniature garden railway track in the field. I am thank ful for cooler temperatures. It has rained a couple of times but nothing to shout about.

Railway track? What gauge? What is a sun lounger.....
I have a story for Bob. Years ago Newton happened to be in the West Country and he called in to see a bloke who had asked his advice on building 5" gauge locos and had a garden railway. When he arrived he found the bloke and his wife digging a tunnel under their bungalow so he could have a circular track to run on, he'd been limited to a straight line reversing track in the back garden. Honest endeavour!

Didn't manage the sun lounger weather awful, TV awful, early night last night 10 hours sleep now back to normal,Did manage a bit of research possibly another trip to the library today more census and burial dates to find.

Dealing with a sudden glut of lovely cauliflowers from the poly tunnel. This morning I blanched, bagged and froze three of them. This afternoon I'm going to make a load of cauliflower and courgette soup to freeze. There are two or three more on their way, so I am planning a pickling session later in the week. I fancy trying a mixed veg pickle with cauli, courgettes, shallots & runner beans.

With all of the poor weather earlier in the year the price of calis went up and the quality down , well done for attending so well and protecting yours.

Withour asking Bob, Stanley, I don't know what gauge. ( Bob is mowing the field at the moment benore our imminent departure). It is the same gauge as the model railway at Springfield Park in Rochdale where the club gives children ( and adults) rides on Sundays and Bank Holidays. We have such a bog field to control here we thought it would be nice to have a railway for the granchildren. We are dividing the field into different areas to give the route a bit of novelty. After the weight of my pumpkin crop today , the train could come in useful to carry produce back up the field!!!

I have never had success with cauliflower or broccoli Wendy but butternut squash, cucumbers, courgettes, and pumpkins are coming out of evey storage space possible. The leeks did well and are now all cooked and frozen in various forms. As for cucmbers, WHAT do you do with a cucumber glut?

Pick them small and pickle them , or add to yoghurt and serve with pitta bread and curry.

Thay are small ones and I had thought of pickling them. No problem eating them fresh but believe me we will not get through all of these!!!!!

We are heading out to Brittany a week today so perhaps I will start preparing, washing if it's dry. I also want to make a trip to the library. Eileen

I'm at a straight edge in the Shed so today could see a couple of articles being written for the BET.

Off to Mum's in Leeds. A trip to her local M&S food store to stock up on ready meals for the week ahead, work my way through a list of little jobs then home again. Why does such an easy day leave me emotionally drained and exhausted??

Today is put everything away day and a trip to the local Model Engineering BBQ at Springfield Park Rochdale. Its thei 80th birthday. Yes Stanley steam and electric, he has made both and uses them at Springfield Park. He has made a couple of seats to carry the children but stillneeds to do thetrain for France. the first run of track looks good.

Off to the shops now. I have brought back bags of cucumbers and courgettes but I think we need something else to eat as well!!!

I have two cucumbers and three tomatoes on my outdoor plants here.

Wendy, I know a lady who had the same responsibility, filling her mother and father's freezer every weekend with meals for the week. Her problem was that she lived in Kirby Lonsdale and her parents were in Weston super Mare!
Shed won over articles and today I'll be in there working on crankshaft modifications. The things we do for light entertainment!

Going for a walk, the ground round here is sodden again, so we may head for Weets.

Sewing day today. I am making'things' for an Art and Craft fayre in late October.Bob is back at the Model Railway celebrations. I hope the rain stops. By the way Stanley it is a 5 inch gauge railway Bob is making in France. I think he has taken some photos of work in progress, I'll see what I can dig out ( good pun that, there was a lot of digging and I now have some raised beds for my veggies)

Today has been busy did loads of washing and got them dry outside, I have ironed them and put them away. Plus other ironing from previous washes Also whilst Dave mowed the lawn I weeded the beds so the garden is tidy for when we are away. Also bagged up some stuff (there's that word again) ready for the trip. Just sat down thought I would catch up with OGFB. Eileen

As I said on another topic, how can anyone be bored? Wendy, I think the ground is wetter at the moment than at any time this summer.
Shed and reading as usual today, what a great life!
Only drawback to milling in the shed is that if you don't keep cleaning up the small sharp chips get everywhere in the house! Thank God for vacuum cleaners. Newton once told me about the trouble he got into with his mother when he was a lad and had a lathe in the attic. This was in the days of the Ewbank cleaner.....

I've got a load of runner beans to blanch & freeze and a pile of washing to do....don't think it is going to be a good drying day. This afternoon it's down to the Archive Room to help collate the autumn edition of the Earby Chronicles, the history society's quarterly magazine. We have over 120 members, some in far flung corners of the world.

Mrs Tiz is making some extra 300-mile round trips to London because both parents have had recent health troubles, and her sister is doing more frequent 60-mile round trips from where she lives. Her dad was rushed to hospital but is back home - he has Parkinson's and heart trouble, but shortly afterwards sister discovered mum in a bad state and had to get her to hospital. Sister is getting married in USA soon and will be away 3 weeks. Nobody seems to know what mum's condition will be when she comes home - will she be better or worse than before, will she be able to walk up the stairs, get out of a chair, do she and dad need to be in a smaller house? She was supposed to be `having tests' but they still haven't been done, they got delayed and then it was Bank Holiday (don't get ill on a Bank Holiday). We need them to make an assessment of what her needs will be when she returns home but it seems increasingly like she won't get it until she returns, which makes planning difficult. The government wants us all to get old in our own homes but I guess the ministers are all too young to realise what it's really like for all concerned!

My attention today is focussed on a family member who is seriously ill. All we can do is carry on and watch and wait.

Sorry to hear that Stanley.
Tiz, it sounds as if you and Mrs Tiz have a lot to deal with at the moment. I understood that an assessment has to be done before an elderly person leaves hospital, especially if there is no one at home to look after them. Whenever my Mum has been in hospital she assures them that her son & daughter are there to look after her....which we are of course, but both at least 40 miles away!

Families tend to keep you on your toes..... always something that needs attention!
