Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
There was a nasty accident on Bleara Road yesterday evening involving a car and a cyclist. I looked out of my window soon after 6pm and the road was full of blue lights with more arriving from all directions. I understand the cyclist didn't survive.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
News from the police today that 3 people, including a 16 year old girl, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving. That must mean that no one admitted to being the driver. A man in his 50s died at the scene.
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
There were 3 police cars passed me, on blues and twos, when I came through Colne around 6:30 ish yesterday evening, I suspect they were in their way to that incident.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
One of our cctv cameras picks up Bleara Road in it's peripheral view, it's about a third of a mile away and slightly distorted but possible to see the headlights heading for the site of the accident. I have emailed the police this morning, just incase they can extract some information from it.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
The accident investigation police have just been and collected the cctv footage. It does actually show the accident happening and the poor cyclist landing in the field. No detail but at least it gives them exact timings.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Nice to know you could help Wendy.
What got my attention (and Kev's as well when he washed his car windows) was the wind chill. It was beyond biting!
I used to think it was important to have daily exercise. Now I find I have different priorities!
SeeTHIS for what caught my eye later.
I shall not be trying it....

I've broken one of my rings, it snapped while pushing a trolley in Aldi (I told Paulette that shopping was a dangerous activity) the initial break is where I had a bit added but it's broken across the hallmark stamp too. Obviously too delicate for a clumsy oaf like me
I've used Leon Dewhirst previously, for jewellery repairs, when he had a shop in Barnoldswick. He's located in the Piece Hall in Halifax now, I've messaged him and hopefully he can fettle it.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Going through some old family documents and photos I found a photo of Queen Elizabeth visiting what was obviously a factory. My father worked for Mullard/Philips in Blackburn from leaving the RAF in 1946 until retirement so I guessed that would be the factory. A quick web search pinned it down to Mullard on 14 April 1955. This site show pics of the Queen's visit to Blackburn and includes a couple taken at Mullard's: LINK
While searching I also found this Mullard site which I think will appeal to OG members! Mullard Magic

They'd have a problem today finding local troops for the guard of honour Peter!
Kev, the shank of that ring looks a bit thin. Has it worn over the years?

Well done that Lad! but why is the question "Why can't they be recycled in Hampshire?" not being addressed more forcibly?

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
You may remember that some time ago, maybe late summer last year that I reported the street light was out on our back street. Nothing happened for quite a while then a bloke rocked up without a ladder to have look, he didn't fix it. All went quiet for a couple of months then another bloke came in HI Vis and took a photo, he went away as well. Failures of action were reported to our local County Councillor (Jenny Purcell).
All quite through the long very dark nights until about 3 weeks ago. Bloke number three rocked up with a spray can and he marked the back street out in blue spray. One branch of his markings went directly to next doors water stop cock in the pavement. With it being blue marker paint I thought it may be a water supply problem next door. We got a letter last week through the door from United Utilities asking everyone to clear the back streets of parked cars as they intended to dig the street up, it stated that the work could take 4 days and would start today. Barriers, plant and a digger commenced work this morning and we currently have two sub contractor blokes looking down the hole. They have confirmed that the are looking for an underground electrical fault.
Never seen anyone actually testing the lamp although I suppose they could have come when we were out, or one would hope they did!
They are currently taking pictures of their hole.

It was all going so well, currently waiting for the AA again.
An hour later, the engine shut off error has cleared and it started. The AA man followed me to the auto electrician and run me back home.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Looks like the blokes that dig the hole don't do the repair. The hole is surrounded by barriers and electrical safety and warning notices have been attached to the cable, the hole is about 6ft deep. I suppose we are now waiting for a sparky to fix it? I do hope they tested the lamp!
A completely different thing. Our microwave is on its way out, the turntable is in stagger mode so I reckon the motor is duff.
Anyway it's about 5 years old and was relatively cheap from Aldi (about £49.00 rings a bell) so we have replaced it with a new Samsung model. It's a bit bigger than the last one and black so it matches the Air Fryer on the counter top. It has a ceramic interior for easy cleaning and a two year warranty and a multitude of auto programs to cover most bases.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Seems to be the norm, we had a crew to erect the barriers, a crew to dig the hole, a crew to take the spoil away, a crew to run the cable, a crew to fill the hole, a tarmac crew and then the barrier crew came back. Would be much more efficient with one crew doing it all.PanBiker wrote: ↑10 Feb 2025, 16:19 Looks like the blokes that dig the hole don't do the repair. It's very sad Kev, he looks like a special bloke. We can only hope that he died instantly.
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Indeed, there's certainly some strange circumstances around the incident.
The BBC story will be advert free and probably easier to read

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Indeed Kev..... That Burnley Express clip was a joke!
The BBC report was clearer and we shall have to wait until they have sorted it out before we know what happened. Although it looks like car hits bike at speed....
Now for the equally important matter. Am I to understand that your car is with the auto-electrician again? I'm so sorry to hear it has failed you yet again..... If it was me I would be itching to see the back of it, I could never trust it again. Good luck with a resolution!
Ian, somewhere there will be a thick book of internal regulations that forbids one gang doing work allocated to another.
Many years ago 'demarcation disputes' were common especially in the shipyards. Each union controlled its own trade and if one strayed onto another's turf there was an immediate lightning strike. Eventually it was agreed that this was inefficient and it was done away with. It sounds as though the electric company need to go back and relearn those lessons from long ago!
