First Generation
John WIDDUP was born in 1764 in Rochdale.1 Information on the family tree at Colne library indicates 1750 to 1755, however the IGI states 1764. This date has not yet been confirmed despite diligent search into local Parish records in and around Rochdale. On 25 Oct 1785 when John was 21, he married Martha EDMONDSON in Rochdale. The witness to the marriage was Margaret Edmundson. Martha was born in Rochdale c 1764, although again this has not been confirmed at source 1
Martha was buried on 10th January 1828 in Barnoldswick 4
John’s occupation was a carpenter. At the time of the birth of the eldest son John was living at Packer Meadows next to St Chad’s church, Rochdale. This is formation has recently been identified on the baptism records of St Chad’s Church Rochdale . On moving to Salterforth John continued to be a carpenter.
Martha and John had the following children:
1. William (b March 23rd 1786-), born in Rochdale
2. John (1791-<1851), born in Salterforth
3. Mary (b 1795).1,2 At the age of 13, Mary was baptised in St Bartholomew’s Colne on 20 Mar 1808. In 1821 when Mary was 26, it is believed that she married Benjamin PICKOVER5, in St Mary the Ghyll in Barnoldswick.5

9. Sarah . Sarah died in 1822. She may have been born the same year. She was buried on 1 Apr 1822 in Dissenters burial ground Ghyll, Barnoldswick.4
