Roberta Flack has died aged 88.
RIP.

Great voice - and this track would be in my all time personal top ten. There is the added touch that it was written by Salford lad, Ewan McColl for Peggy Seeger. There seems to be a lot of dust in the air this afternoon.

I received an email yesterday from Ted Harrison's daughter informing the Earby History Society that Ted died last year. He had remained a member for many years and always enjoyed reading the Earby Chronicles. Ted was one of the early members on One Guy, known by the username Handlamp. He wrote about his life working on the railways.

I asked Ted's daughter and he was 98 years old.
What caught my attention today is that Gene Hackman has died. I think we all can remember the French Connection.... (LINK)

Boris Vasilievich Spassky Grandmaster has died at the age of 88.

I saw him live at the last tournament I attended. The Lloyds Bank tournament at the Great Northern Hotel at Kings Cross in August 1984, where he finished in joint first place. I looked up whilst in the Gents on a comfort break to see him standing close by. Very democratic I thought -

A former World Champion, and giant of 20th century world chess.

Check mate.

I feel that it is worth noting the death of Dolly Parton's husband of 60 years, Carl Dean. He stayed out of the limelight for all that time, preferring to focus on his tarmac business.

I saw that Wendy but knew nothing about him.
(My favourite Dolly Parton quote, heard while I was in the US. It had been reported that she was to play Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. The commentator said "I don't know about her acting but she sure can hang over a balcony!")

Missed this one . starred with George Formby and was one of the first on-air announcers for the BBC’s early television broadcasts.

Eileen Bennett, who has died aged 105, was known to George Formby fans as his love interest in the 1942 comedy Much Too Shy and, during the war, played the ingénue lead, from 1942 to 1945, at the Strand Theatre in the West End production of Arsenic and Old Lace, when she was described by one critic as “the very essence of blonde pulchritude”.

July 1945,, she married Col Thomas Hammond, an American soldier stationed in London as an adjutant to General Eisenhower, and gave up her acting career for family life., in September 1945 moving to the US Postwar she followed her husband around military postings, to Paris and the US, and brought up their two sons, of whom Nicholas would follow his mother into acting, starring as Friedrich von Trapp in the film version of The Sound of Music (1965).

In 1970, soon after retirement in Washington, Thomas Hammond died from a heart attack. Eileen remained in Washington working as a guide for visiting foreign diplomatic families and at the Hillwood museum, home to a large decorative arts collection. Later she moved to an army retirement community.

Her sons survive her.

That's sad news and 76 is no age. Prostate cancer can now be detected early with a simple PSA blood test, the earlier it is detected greatly increases the effectiveness of treatment. Just speak to your doctor.

Richard Chamberlain, always Dr Kildare to me, has died. One of the first records I bought was the Dr Kildare Theme.
I've just remembered that he was in the 1973 version of The Three Musketeers which was a fabulous film with Michael York as d'Artagnan.

I associate him with "Shogun" a long time ago. He's responsible for me knowing what 'konichiwa' and a few other Japanese words mean. The Three musketeers was good as well. You knew where you stood in a film in those days.

In more innocent times - I remember being surprised when it was revealed that he was gay. I take it as read now, for all actors and most MP's.

Sorry to hear about Richard Chamberlain.... He will always be Kildare to me also Wendy.....
